Cover Reveal: Victor #2 in the Eden East YA fantasy novels #amreading

There’s nothing more exciting than the moment you see your books cover for the first time. I wondered whether, if the second time I saw one, the novelty would have worn off. But no. It most definitely has not. If anything, it was even more exciting.

I launched Keepers, the first in my Young Adult fantasy series in November 2017.

I am in the final straight with Victor. I have about 10,000 words or so left to write and a full (short) edit. Then, I hope, it will be ready to go to the editor. Even if I have to get the hot glue gun out and superglue my ass to my office chair, this sequel is being finished THIS month.

My hope is to publish Victor sometime between late April and mid-May.

Without further ado, here is the brand spanking, shit hot shiny, new cover: Continue reading

The Bloggers Bash Blog Post Competition Extended! #SundayBlogShare @bloggersbash

#bloggersbash #writing #competition #bloggingThe Bloggers Bash Blog Post Competition – Deadline for Entries Extended

We’ve listened, and we’ve acted. We’re pleased to announce that we’ve extended the deadline for entries to this year’s Bloggers Bash Blog Post competition. The deadline for entries is now 23:59 on Thursday 22nd March 2018.

What is the competition about, and how do I enter?

As you may have noticed, there’s another exciting event happening in London the same day as our Bloggers Bash. Although it won’t be as much fun as our event, the news of a Royal Wedding has undoubtedly given us a lot to think about.

So, the Bloggers Bash Blog Post Competition 2018 is on the theme of ‘Royalty.’ You’ve got a maximum of 300 words to share a flash fiction story, anecdote, poem, or another piece of work or writing on the theme of royalty. You might be inspired by Harry and his princess, or by the venue of this year’s Bloggers Bash (George IV). Or you might have another idea in mind. If you’re a photographer, then publish a post that includes photos of what ‘Royalty’ means to you.

The Cost: £5 per entry or £8 for two entries – all proceeds go to funding The Bloggers Bash, payment accepted through PayPal only, at the bottom of this post.

IMPORTANT – How to submit: Publish your entry(ies) on your blog and then drop an email to annualbloggersbash@yahoo.co.uk with the following information:  Continue reading

5 Reasons Why Flash Fiction Makes You A Better Writer #amwriting #MondayBlogs @Charli_Mills

There’s nothing I like more than getting to the point. That’s what flash fiction does, and it’s also how I started writing. For the longest time, I wrote fractured pieces, snippets of stories that weren’t destined for me to finish. Characters came and went, challenges were entered, and pieces of stories lay frayed at the edges and abandoned to dusty corners.

But the skills I picked up writing flash fiction were invaluable.

If it weren’t for the heroics of bloggers and community builders like Charli Mills, I might never have been brave enough to pick up the proverbial pen and grit my way through 70,000 words.

February sees the launch of the first flash fiction anthology from Charli’s writing community: The Rough Writers over at The Carrot Ranch. I am both humbled and deeply honored to have been part of that anthology.

Happy VILLaintines – Why your villain needs a heart #amwriting #ValentinesDay

At festive periods, there’s usually a slew of charitable adverts and campaigns to encourage our altruistic sides, (something I believe we should do more of).

But today, for Valentines, I’m proposing a rather more alternative form of giving. To appease my villainous rants, I need y’all to be a doll and give your damn villain a heart.

Don’t screw up your latest villainous scribbles just yet. Indulge me, and I’ll explain why your villain needs a heart.

Oh, and should you want more detail, this is a topic I cover in my book 13 Steps To Evil – How To Craft A Superbad VillainContinue reading

Author Earnings – The State of The Industry #MondayBlogs #amwriting

There’s only one truth in the publishing industry: change is constant. Whether it’s the development of the Kindle, the closure of a bookstore chain or the latest groan-inducing tweak in the Amazon algorithms, change is constant, and the pace of it ain’t slowing down.

So what’s a gal to do to keep up with the latest trends, and data?

Last week I wrote a post that details a few ways to learn how to market and keep up with current trends, but for now, you should also read the latest author earnings report.

I’m going to highlight a few of the most salient trends and things I thought were worth noting.

Learn How To Market Your Books #MondayBlogs #amwriting

I get asked a lot of marketing and publishing questions. Most are easy to answer. But a teeny tiny nanosqueak percentage of them make my eye twitch. The ‘answer on a plate’ types who think there’s a magical panacea-button that will shower them in glittery dollar bills from their millionth book sale.

Anyway. I’m leashing my rant because contrary to excessive sarcasm and perpetual moaning, there is nothing I love more than helping people, especially if that help leads to selling or publishing books. And you know what helps you sell books?

Forehead creasing, caffeine addictions, midnight dates, multiple RSI cures and a laptop for a BFF.

Okay, fine. There are a few other things that rise out of the sweaty exhausted writer ashes to help bring in the dollars: Continue reading

The Bloggers Bash Blog Post Competition

The Bloggers Bash writing competition was so popular last year that the committee is bringing it back (with a slight difference) for 2018.

Untangle Plot Problems With This Quick Tip #MondayBlogs #amwriting

Writers talk about their characters being disobedient all the time. It’s like some kind of cosmic joke, we spend weeks planning, checking, re-checking. We dust our shirt collar in a smug, ‘I’ve defeated my story outline’ pose, only to get 30,000 words or so into our novel and the little darlings bastards have pitched a killer twist that’s so far out of left field even book-God himself wouldn’t have seen it coming.

Sentient.

I’m telling you.

Those little story critters know exactly what their doing. Lulling us into a false sense of security and then when we’re balls deep into the flabby middle, they slap us upside the head with something so good, we can’t ignore it. Tyrants. Heathens. Thou cullionly idle-headed hedge-pigs!

And so, the plot is messed up, the timeline fudged and your brain a crockpot of drafts, twists, confused dialogue and stroppy characters.

What to do?

Here’s a quick tip to help you beat those little darlings back into shape. Continue reading
