Good piece. I’m with you. My fav is Maleficent. The pretty princess has a mud fight; she has the courage to free Maleficent’s wings, and is saved by a kiss not from a pining prince but from the “true love” of Maleficent, the fierce witch who cursed her in the first place. Now there’s a moral I can live with.

I think a love of Disney comes from being raised on Disney. I was, and I love Disney movies, while simultaneously hoping my daughter never learns anything from them. You should hear me rant about the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and why it’s necessary for Minnie and Daisy to run around in high heels on a toddler show.

Good point well made – Eric was enchanted – hadn’t thought of that – was he actually enchanted or uwas it the spell on Ariel’s voice?

Thanks for the comment 🙂 I think Merida is pretty her hair is beautiful – guess your right about her choosing to change too, I think it’s sad she had to change at all really 🙁

To be fair, Eric was enchanted with magic by Ursula! It wasn’t just a pretty voice, it was a spell.
Disney movies do have a lot of dark messages and context though. I do really like Milan and Hercules though!! Check those out! Milan is a pretty kick-ass lady! And Megara (the lady in Hercules) is sassy and strong. 🙂
The Hunchback is freaking scary though. Guy wants to throw Quasimod
o into a well to “send him back to hell” (actual line). Did I mention that Quasi is a newborn baby in this scene!?!

I agree and disagree equally. I would have much preferred a Cinderella movie where the prince falls in love with her in her rags, but most people don’t want to see that. One problem I have had recently is with Brave. People say it is fast-forward thinking in that it is the first animated Disney movie where she doesn’t have a love interest. Great, but why? It is coincidence that the girl who seemingly is “less attractive” than previous “princesses” is the one without a love interest? I am partially biased, because I look like Merida, but still 🙂 I definitely agree with #3 and #4. But in regards to the second one, I thought of it more like she CHOSE to change because she wanted to be with him, not that he asked her to. Same thing I guess.
