I completely agree, I tend to search for images of their faces at the start of developing them, but I didn't realise that is what I was doing until I read your comment! I had no idea that a character on a book cover made that much difference, thats an amazing golden nugget of knowledge to keep for when I get to the book cover creation stage :) Thanks so much for commenting :)

I think I have read somewhere that having a character on the cover makes a book more successful… providing it is one people can identify with.

I never felt I needed images of my characters, and in fact, when I went searching for some to make my trailers, I found it impossible. The only one which fitted perfectly, and which I knew instantly as I saw it, was the one for the character called Annalee. That was almost a spooky moment of recognition lol!

Perhaps it would work better right at the beginning, before the characters are fully fledged. I can see it would help to have that image fixed in your mind as you write.

This was very interesting! I like knowing what characters look like, both my own and in books I read, and I find I’m more drawn to books that depict the characters on the cover.

Yes, I agree, pictures make the character more three-dimensional. Lately, I haven’t written anything long enough for that much detail but that shouldn’t matter. Thank you for the pep talk. Wonderful post and great timing. <3 <3

In reply to TermiteWriter. That's so interesting, I too have very clear images of their faces but unfortunately I'm not good enough at drawing to create their faces on the page :( which is why I have to look for images online or in books. Thanks for reading and commenting :)
