Hi Sacha. I know this is an old post, but I just wanted to say thanks for this. My current WIP has a lesbian MC (one of the MCs – the other is a teenage boy). She’s a retired war photographer, inspired by the likes of Annemarie Swarzenbach, Dorothea Lange and Margaret Bourke-White. She’s in her 70’s in 1974 when the book is set, so perhaps some of your terminology wouldn’t be appropriate, but it’s still a really helpful and encouraging post. My MC has her issues but she’s a wonderful, warm woman and I’ve loved being in her company. She’s a bit of a heroine on the quiet and I’m just hoping I can think of another vehicle for her in the future. Thank you again and all the best to you and your family

In reply to Ana. Hi there, sorry for the LONGGGGG delay in replying. Just go for it. WRite the story your characters want you to write no matter the sexuality. If you're in doubt, ask some lesbians to read it and give you comments on whether it's been portrayed accurately :D hope that helps. best of luck

Well, I'm gonna try to get an answer although the post was written in 2015 So... Just a few months ago I began to question my heterosexuality. First I thought i was bisexual cause I had some... Very lesbian dreams xd but just a few days ago, when my friend sent me a article about lesbians and compulsory heterosexuality that I realised that I WAS SO FUCKING LESBIAN xd the thing is, I have never been with girls (or boys, by the way). I know I feel very sexually attracted to women but in real life I havent really found put any woman who i really like. I mean, I discovered a few days ago xd I thought I really like men but no way. The point is... I was writting a novel. It's not centered in love but it has a role in the plot. The love interest was going to be a man but now I know that I was so stucked in heteronormativity I was thinking in a principal lesbian couple. But i have no experience (i'm new in this xd). However, knowing I have no real attraction for men (I just thought I had but only for impossible men, like fictional men. The moment a real boy tries something I just... UGH NO PLIZ) I'm afraid to sentence to compulsory heterosexuality to my female character or not write a healthy relationship with the male. So... Help??? <333 Pd: i also loved the article. In reply to margo. I think it's different for different groups of people. I can completely understand why some who have experienced such traumatic events might find it a difficult word, but it is a mainstream word used commonly in many circles. I personally haven't ever heard it used in a derogatory way or to purposefully exclude people. Personally I find that abhorrent.

i just want to say that using “gold star” is really problematic. it excludes lesbians with a history of trauma and those who feel compulsory heterosexuality to the point they sleep with men. i know its not always meant to be harmful but i’ve seen it used to purposely exclude lesbians from the community in very hateful ways. i just don’t like to see the term encouraged to be used.

In reply to Sacha Black. It's urban fantasy werewolf fiction. Rio and her best friend, Isaac, are both werewolves, and not the nice kind. They're sarcastic, moody, broody, and violent as hell when the need arises. It's kind of hard to explain at this point because I recently decided the entire first half of the first draft needed to be the last part of the story instead of the beginning. So, basically it follows their lives through their first horrible shift, and all of the heartache and bullshit they have to endure from age 16 through their early 30's. Lots of drama and violence, a little sex and a little bit of tragic romance.
