WTF is a Patreon?

The $2 Rebel Tier

At this tier, you’ll get early access to all of the episodes. These are loaded on Sundays, ahead of the episode airing on weds.

Once a month, I run “Poison and Prose” sessions. This is a live Q&A session where you can ask me anything. We also do timed “sprints” where we all mute ourselves and write on our manuscripts for a set amount of time. Generally they’re packed with totes emosh good feels and everyone goes away warm and squishy on the inside and I go away mildly irked that I’m not quite as dead on the inside as I like to think.

In addition, when I bulk book podcast guests, I will post up a list and give you the opportunity to ask the guest questions.

You also get access to news before anyone else, and opportunities like ARC copies.

And then there’s the bonus funnies and content I share, like a VERY sweary blooper reel from the audiobook I recorded, or a blooper reel from a series of reels I recorded.

The $5 Rebel Warrior Tier

Each successive tier is cumulative. So you get everything at the lower tier and as part of the $5 tier, you get access to the Rebel Author Slack group.

The Slack group is a *currently* 85+ strong group of writers and honestly I’m not just saying this, but it’s the most supportive and lovely community I’ve ever had the privilege of being a part of. I’m in the group more or less every day. I answer questions, share info, ask questions, seek feedback. But it’s so much more than that. You guys lead and run the Slack group. Supporting each other, answering questions, cheering each other on. Lots of people are nervous to join in, but when you say hello, you’ll get swamped with welcomes.

The group even runs its own critique circle (though I’m not part of this nor can I take any credit it was engineered by one of the amazing rebel patrons).

Last, we are *currently* running quarterly Rebel Challenges. These challenges are basically group cheerleading. NOTE IT’S OPEN TO ALL (including the $2 tier). The reason I’ve placed it under this  tier is because a lot of the cheer leading happens inside the slack group. So if you’re not in Slack, it can be a little less involved. For each quarter, we have a spreadsheet (thank you to another patron for creating this) and everyone puts their goals down. We can then track word counts, edits, ass in chair time and you can see everyone’s progress. Each week someone hosts for the week. Everyone does something different. Some host writing sprints, others share rebel stories from history, share motivational quotes, and much more.

The $15 Rebel Emporer Tier

As mentioned, you get access to all of the above. But the big sweetener for this tier, are the quarterly masterclasses. 

Each quarter, we pick a book, books, or trope, and we read the stories together. Then we come together for a live class. Where I present a slide deck that breaks down the book or trope we’ve been reading. I’ll pull apart the story and show you what the author does well, and how you can use those tools in your own work too. Classes run for 90-120 minutes and there’s lots of opportunity for discussion and questions.

There’s also a private slack channel that only those in this tier have access to. We discuss various elements of the books and what we’re up to in the classes.

Hello and welcome to the Rebel Author Podcast.

My name is Sacha Black and this is episode 0.

Why have an episode 0? Well because I wanted to tell you a little about the show and what to expect as well as a little about me and who I am.

And, if I’m being completely honest, it gives me a chance to get the podcast feed set up in advance so that if I make any fuck-ups, I have a chance to correct them before the episode’s launch.

What can you expect from The Rebel Author Podcast?

Well, this show’s blurb is the following:

A motivational show for all the creatives out there with an inner rebel. Listen for interviews, industry news, tips, tricks and tools to help you take your creative business to the next level.

Which is why each episode will be hosted by me as I interview someone that I think will provide you guys with inspiration, motivation, lessons on creativity, business, publishing or marketing.

I’ll be launching the episodes fortnightly in 2019 with the hope that I can move into weekly episodes in the near future.

Who am I? 

If you don’t know who I am, I’m a proud indie author. I write YA books in a variety of genres, I also write nonfiction writing craft books. I’m a developmental editor, freelancer and occasional rebel. I’m a wife, mum, expensive shoe collector and lover of conspiracies, self-help and favourer of the go hard or go home philosophy. I also eat too much chocolate, drink too much caffeine and swear like a fucking trooper.

So why have a podcast?

I’ve blogged for years, the purpose was to share lessons Id personally learnt on my journey to full-time writing. But as the business grew, it actually became harder and harder to keep up the intensive work of blogging. I needed a new solution. A way to reach and give back to everyone who’s supported me along the way, and those just joining the industry

I suppose in a way, this podcast has been a long time in the making. I’ve been obsessively listening to podcasts for over half a decade. Frankly, I’m amazed I didn’t start one earlier.

I guess combine my podcast obsessery with the fact I used to do voice over acting as a teenager and it was waiting to happen. But like so many creatives I suffered with doubt and imposter syndrome. It wasn’t until I appeared on several podcasts and I had lots of encouraging feedback, that it even became a twinkling idea.

I’ve had several lovely people tell me I have a voice for audio though what that means about my face for TV I can only speculate. But what tipped me over the edge was a random act of kindness.

A lovely lady at Edinburgh 20books to 50k came up to me and told me she kept hearing me speak around the venue and that she could have listened to my voice all day. It was such a surprise comment but one that filled me with confidence. So I will forever be grateful to you for your spontaneous compliment which ultimately helped me birth The Rebel Author Podcast

I’ve pulled together a list of my fave podcasts that have helped me grow a wealth of marketing and industry knowledge as well as craft skills.

If your favorite pod isn’t on the list, why not drop it in the comments.

If you’re not into podcasts or haven’t found time to listen, then you’re missing out.

Here are a few quick tricks I use to consume the knowledge:

1. Listen at a faster speed. It takes a bit of getting used to, but you can train your brain. I listen to podcasts anywhere from 1.25x speed to 2x speed. It means you consume the info faster and it takes up less time.
2. Listen in dead time. For example, when walking the kids to school, in the car, on the way to work, walking the dog, while cooking.
3. Keep a notes file specifically for any tips you pick up via podcasts in your phone for easy access. If you’re listening on the go, it’s hard to action anything you hear at the same time.

Right, to the podcasts. The ones I’ve recommended are produced by authors actually in the thick of the crazy marketing world. They’re living and breathing publishing, which is why their podcasts are so good.

For those with smartphones – I’d recommend listening via your regular podcast app. But most of these podcasts have been running for years, so if you want to hit up the backlist, then go to their websites.

MARKETING AND PUBLISHING PODCASTS

Joanna Penn’s The Creative Penn Podcast

Joanna Penn is an indie publishing legend. Her podcast is in an interview format (or a solo show) where she will interview guests on particular topics related to writing, marketing and publishing. She covers everything from craft all the way up to Mindset, mailing list management, advertising techniques and everything in between.

Six Figure Authors

Co-hosted by Lindsay Buroker, Jo Lallo and Andrea Pearson. After leaving the podcast world six months ago, I’m thrilled that Lindsay is back. Six Figure Authors is the show that helps you take your writing career to the next level. The trio share their own insights, as authors who’ve been publishing since the beginning of the e-reader revolution. They’ll also interview industry experts and other successful authors to help you figure out what’s working right now.

Sell More Books Show

This podcast is hardcore frontline news, views and tips. Co-hosted by Bryan Cohen and Jim Krukal, the duo aims to bring you the latest in publishing news, their banter-filled views on it, and tips and tricks for selling as many books as possible. Another one of my faves. It’s also led to them running an annual conference in Chicago every year. For those of us not on that side of the pond – one for the bucket list.

Alliance of Independent Author’s Podcast

The Alliance of Independent Authors is amazing. Akin to a union for indies, it’s done so much for me, enabling me to meet other authors, make connections and even a little something that’s in the works next year. But more on that another day. Their podcast is super. They split the shows by beginner or advanced sessions and even have guests like Joanna Penn on the advanced show. It’s chock full of insight and I always leave with actions and things to do.

Self Publishing Formula

Mark Dawson, aside for his thriller books, is renowned as the go-to guy for advertising courses. With his team, they’ve taught literally thousands of authors how to use the many and varied advertising steams. Me included. James (one of Mark’s teammates) along with Mark, run the Self Publishing Formula podcast. Like the others, it’s filled with interesting interviews on the latest marketing trends and tactics. They also do an interesting book clinic segment for Patreon supporters. They give one person’s book a total overhaul to help them sell more books. It’s fascinating.

Great Writers Share 

It’s no secret that writing can be lonely work. But, does it really have to be? Whether you’re full-time, part-time, or just starting out, you’ll get insights into the tricks, tips and production habits of writers from every level of the biz. From bestselling authors, to those launching their first novels, you’re sure to be in the company of friends as they encourage great writers to divulge and share their secrets.

I’m new to this podcast, but Zach Bohannon and J. Thorn are fantastic presenters focusing on the nitty-gritty of making an author career happen. Topics range far and wide including money management, editing and social media.

WRITING CRAFT PODS

I was surprised to realize I don’t listen to that many writing craft podcasts, I guess much of that learning comes from reading craft books and deconstructing the novels I read. However, there are a couple!

Writing Excuses

This podcast is for anyone in a rush. Each episode is only 15 minutes long and they go deep into one small area of writing. Co-hosted by a team of authors including Brandon Sanderson, Dan Wells and Mary Robinette Kowal to name a few. Their podcast is funny, gritty and genuinely helpful. I highly recommend it.

 The Story Grid

The Story Grid is co-hosted by Tim Grahl and Shawn Coyne, who happens to be the author of the Story Grid a meaty book all about story structure. Their podcasts have gone into a variety of topics, including Tim receiving detailed critiques on how to better his craft. Well worth a listen – oh and buy the book while you’re at it. BUSINESS PODCASTS

Last but by no means least, is the Smart Passive Income Podcast. Hosted by Pat Flynn, this podcast is fascinating. It has a real business spin and focuses on how you can earn more money passively. Which as we all know is the goal. Let your books work for you, not the other way around. Any savvy author should be listening.
