I am running three session times to try and accommodate as many timezones as I can (more on this below).

“Writing to market” isn’t new. But when teachers talk about it they focus on understanding the market, advertising, brand and pitch. But what about the writing and craft of writing to market? If you’re tired of trying to work out how to deliver what readers want, then this is the workshop for you.

In this session, I’ll explain:

How to deconstruct bestselling books and implement the tools you find

An easy three step methodology for deconstruction

Practical examples of deconstruction and implementation in your own work

Why you’re not using copywriting enough

How to intentionally slip TikTok-able/Marketable scenes into your novels that will hook readers

Examples of viral hooks that work on social media (and why)

What’s in a hook and how you can create your own

The craft of tropes

Live deconstruction using examples from those in the session.

You’ll also receive a workbook containing exercises for you to implement all the things you learn during the session.

FAQ

Will this session be recorded? Will the recording be available for sale?

The session will be recorded. The recording will only be available to ticket-holders. I will not sell the recording. I am only doing these as live sessions. When I teach, I love to see everyone’s reactions and get audience participation. But depending on demand, I may run more of them in the future.

Episode Transcript

Welcome to The Rebel Author Podcast episode nine and happy fucking New Year guys. It is a new year. And ladies and gentlemen, a new decade too. Can you believe that we’re in a new decade? Does anybody else feel as old as I do right now? Because you know… wow they the Millennium does not feel like it was 20 years ago. I mean, what? That is outrageous. Anyway, I hope you are listening amongst your hangovers and sleep deprived brains and maybe vomiting and if you are make sure you reached the bowl. I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas and a wonderful new year.

Today I have something special… This is a surprise episode. Well it’s not a surprise episode because we all knew episode nine was coming. But it’s a surprise because it’s not an interview episode. Today is a solo show from me. And hopefully you’re not all going to turn it off. However, next week normal service will return and I will be interviewing YouTube sensation Jenna Moreci. So if I’m not interviewing anyone today, what the hell is this show? Well, in a bid to be more accountable and transparent and also let’s be real give me a bit of a kick up the ass, I’m going to try a new thing. I’m going to run a quarterly solo show. It’s going to be a shortsshow oooh I nearly said shit show! Anyway, it’s going to be a short show because mostly it’s just me talking, but also because it’s going to be highly specific. I am going to be confessing my quarterly projects, and goals if you want to call them goals, and then come the end of the quarter, I’m going to confess the progress (or not) that I’ve made towards them.

I’m sorry about the windy, hoovery, hairdryer, sounds in the background. Hopefully those will have stopped now. My wife was drying her hair. And I’m amazed that my mic picked it up because it was definitely downstairs. So go mic. Anyway, where was I? Right? Yes. So last time, I asked listeners about their reading goals for 2019 and it was an inadvertent question I didn’t entirely mean to ask it. I obviously meant to ask it. But anyway, lots of you have tweeted or commented, and that made my day. So thanks, guys. I am going to make a thing out of this every single episode, I’m going to frame a question, probably around the episode, or perhaps maybe something thoughtful that I have thought about during the episode, or whatever. And if I get responses, then I will give some of them some shout outs. So last time, we had loads and I’m going to go through some of them now. So a couple actually weren’t about the question. So I’ll start with those.

Ida Duque Writes on Twitter says I’ve been binge listening. Is that a thing? (It’s totally a thing) to Sacha Black’s podcast on YouTube. She has a great voice — oh stop. Thank you, darling. Thank you — She’s so freaking cool and relatable and has great advice as She’s literally going through Growing Pains as so many of us are in this writing thing. You know what? I really am and I hope that I am honest and transparent enough that you guys can see both the highs and the lows, as I do go through this whole writing thing and hopefully you can learn from my fuck ups. So thank you Ida. That was really great. Also, yes, if you didn’t know I do post all of my podcast episodes on to YouTube, I did have a bit of a duplicate posting issue that’s now been sorted out because I have a new podcast provider. I’m now with Podbean shout out for Podbean and but hopefully those will all be fine now. So if you would like to listen to the podcast on YouTube, you can just type in Sacha Black and you should be able to find me here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCmGEeUxCRW5ZVxwJ_mEunw?

Next in Val Neil says your rant about December at the beginning of the last episode had me laughing my ass off. And thank you, glad that my pain and misery around Christmas makes you laugh. And she also continued to say she doesn’t have Goodreads and she can’t remember how many books she’s read. And as she starts and stops so many. I think as I get older, I start and stop a lot more books than I used to. I have been trying, to finish books, but the older I get the more conscious of my mortality I am and the less time I have to read before I die. So don’t read shit books.

Moving on. Aime Sund says I think I have a Goodreads goal of 25 and I’m done with 23 with two more in progress so I should meet my goal. Wicked. I don’t think I started the Goodreads app until April or something though. Okay, yeah. So it’s not going to track them all. And Goodreads doesn’t count beta reads or arcs either. So I know I’m actually over 25 I love how Goodreads keeps track and so that I can see what I’ve shelved for later which is no small list! Mine neither. And also, I really hate that Goodreads won’t allow you to upload unpublished manuscripts because I’ve read a whole load of those and they don’t count towards my goal, which is painful.

Next one. Tim Seabrook says I had my huge goal of 100—which is insane—and I’ve only hit 84 only—like that’s a small number—plus two unpublished. A lot more of my time this year has been on writing instead of just reading and at the end of the day. That is super, super important. Yes, we should be reading but we also have to write the damn book. Otherwise, we have nothing to publish. Writing and reading should always be in some kind of a balance. Okay, Ritu says… wait for this guy’s… drumroll… 140 read. What? I need is some kind of sound effect for my mind imploding “plus a few unpublished reads as a beta reader” I just… I, there’s nothing I can say to that it’s insane. Well done. Well done that man.

Okay, Edwin Downward, tweeted me and said you asked about reading goals for the end. I use Goodreads to track my reading and unfortunately will once again foreshorten my 30 books target. However, he did read several books that he recommended, and I have put those on my TBR or I definitely put one of them on my TBR anyway. Thank you to everyone who tweeted.

Okay, on to my first quarter 2020 projects. I… am nervous to admit to these goals. This is a public forum and if I don’t hit them, well, shame on me. However, I have 19 goals. Yes, I’m fully aware that sounds like an awful lot but not all of them are enormous. So look, fuck it, I’m just gonna have a go and see how accountable this makes me feel and whether or not it works as a forum. So okay here we go right number one I need to finish and publish The Anatomy of Prose. The Anatomy of Prose is my next nonfiction book at the time of recording this which is the 22nd of December, I am 47,000 words into what I think will be a 67,000 word manuscript so I’m pretty close to the end. And that also means number two, project is finishing and by finish I mean start and edit and finish The Anatomy of Prose Workbook. I always publish those two together. So those are my first two goals. The third goal which goes hand in hand… not goal, I’m not calling them goals. I’m calling them projects when their goals I like to rebel against them. So these are my projects

So project three is to record, edit, master and publish The Anatomy of Prose audiobook. So essentially before Christmas, I thought I was going to record the villains book but I’ve decided actually it makes more sense to go with the books that I’m writing now and then work backwards. So I’ll be doing prose and then I’ll go back and do the audiobook for villains.

Number four is to finish and publish Trey, which is the third book in my young adult fantasy series. Now I’m 75,000 words through this manuscript and I suspect it will probably be another 15 or so thousand. So You know, in the first three months thus far, we’re probably only looking at a total of 15…35… me trying to do math that probably about 45-50,000 months, so I don’t think that’s excessive.

Next in number five, this is so embarrassing this shows *mumbles*. Right, right, number five. Okay, I want to write an exclusive epilogue that goes after the end of Keepers for my readers and as a reader magnet for my fiction readers, so I need to do that.

Number six will be to get a cover to go with that.

And number seven is publish it. So that will be all of the re-editing, the auto responders and everything that goes along that so those are…

Umm seven? I think it was seven. So yes, Okay, number eight. I do some freelance work and I am the conference and blog manager for the lines of independent authors. And every spring and fall, I run their self-publishing advice conference. So that will come into this quarter. So yeah, do the spring self-publishing advice conference. Number nine. I need to put numbers next to these number nine. I have a terrible habit of wasting an hour in the morning so I dropped my son at school and usually, like I’m up early enough, but okay, like maybe 50% of the time I’m home by 8am. Christ, God, I’m already confessing so many things on this frickin baby. I’m not gonna do this again. Anyway, right so I get home on a good day at 8. However, it’s usually 9:00 or 9:30 before I’m really putting my head into the books, so I want to stop that and I want to be productive and have something to show for that first hour in the morning. So here’s me putting my hands up and admitting I procrastinate and need to stop. And and I’m going to do something about that in the first quarter of 2020.

I think this is a number 10… When I launch The Anatomy of Prose, I would like to appear on some podcasts. So I will be pitching some people. And if you guys have any recommendations for podcasts that you listen to that take guests please do tweet me or email me or contact me in some way or another, or if you would like me to come on your podcast hit me up and I would love to come and talk about improving prose.

Number 11 okay, I think I’ve got it, I think it’s number 11. Now, number 11 I would like to do a paperback boxset of villains 13 steps to evil. I’ve been wanting to do one of those for a really long time and just for a multitude of reasons, including being a bad publisher. I haven’t done it . So I I would like to do that as long as funds allow then I will be doing that. It will also be a nice time to coincide with getting the audiobook started or at least the book reviewed and reread and changing things for audio.

Next in his Number 12 the hardback for Keepers so I want to move to having all of my fiction books in hardback and the first one I will be starting with is Keepers. Now the Keepers cover wasn’t designed by my current designers so I’ve always been a bit hesitant to do this because I don’t know if it’s going to require a complete redesign of the cover which will obviously be more expensive than just having a hardback created and attached to the paperback. So we’ll see hopefully I will be able to do that but we will see.

Number 13, once I have published Trey, I will have three books in my fiction series. So I will be creating a box set. I’ve already got the cover so it will be formatting, proofing sticking in some bonus material and then ordering a proof. I might not publish it in the first quarter just because I’d like to leave some time between publishing Trey and publishing the box set, but I will be doing it nonetheless.

Number 14 getting Rebel Author merchandise live so Icy Sedgwick has created some amazing designs for me. Thank you very much, I see and I would like to get those live so yeah.

15 I… okay whoa big confession. I’m feeling under pressure when I say this. I would like to take this podcast weekly. Now I don’t know how realistic that is. I don’t know if there’s even a desire for that. Would you guys want me to be doing this weekly? But that is my hope, that I can get this weekly. Lot of things depend on that, for example, the amount of work it takes. So yeah, we will see but that is my hope. And let me know if you’d like that.

Number 16 sort some merchandise for my young adult series, I would really like to go to the young adult literature conference and have a stall there. So that is in preparation for that. I haven’t quite made up my mind. So that one is a bit of an iffy one, but nonetheless, it is in there.

Number 17. I am going to make a concerned effort to market to my fiction next year once I have three books and a boxset. And I will also have another fiction book in a different series by the end of next year. So I really need to be spending more time marketing. So I want to do some research and do a bit of a mega marketing plan.

So that was 17 I think. Number 18, finish an Instagram course that I purchased a little while ago.

Number 19. Last, but by no means least, is some really heavy reading into plotting. So in this whole journey into self-publishing has been a roller coaster of finding out what works, what doesn’t work, finding out what I like and what I don’t like. And that’s quite empowering but also overwhelming and confusing, because there’s nobody to tell me the right answer is and whilst I know I’m never going to be the sort of person that can publish a book a month. I also know that getting to the end of 2019 without having published anything isn’t good enough for me. And Yes, okay, I left my job and I did a whole transition I moved house and blah, blah, blah, but I would like to be faster than I am. And I’m happy saying that and I don’t think that’s an unrealistic expectation. And that’s sort of the reason I also said about, the 8am to 9am accountability and making sure I’m productive in that hour. So, yeah, now the reason I am talking about plotting is because I think innately I like structure and, you know, my Myers Briggs is E/I borderline but more NTJ and that essentially means I’m the sort of person that does things in advance. I like planning, I like to do lists, I like structure. I like plotting. What I don’t like is when bloody characters go off and do whatever the fuck they want that isn’t in my plan. So I just think I need to do some more study and re-look at trying to plot because I have basically written the last two books more or less pantsing, and it’s taken me fucking forever to get through them. So I don’t think that is what I should be doing. I think I should be doing a plot with flexibility. So yeah, anyway, I’m going to stop waffling, I’m going to do some research on that.

Now. I also have a stretch goal. Originally this was in my quarterly goals which made me have 20. But also, I don’t really want to burn out. So I put this as a stretch goal and it will be a quarter 2 goal if I don’t get it done. But I would like to start drafting The Scent of Death if I can in quarter one. That is the fiction book I mentioned that’s in a different series. I’ve just had the cover done, and it’s amazing. Okay, I think that’s it. Those are my quarterly goals. I have confessed my goals… They’re not they’re my quarterly projects projects, damn it. And I think that wraps up this episode. My question to you so my question of the week because there is another episode next week. My question to you is, what are your quarterly goals? Or if you don’t have quarterly goals and you have annual goals, then tell me your annual goals. And I will give them some of them a shout out next week.

Today I’m talking to Katie Forrest all about Time Management for Writers. But first…

I’ve been keeping a log of the lessons I’ve learned on my journey through full-time writing and I’ve just posted up (albeit slightly late) my lessons learned from being 6 months employed. You can find it here.

Next up, I’ve been a long time fan of the YouTube star Jenna Moreci, she’s absolutely hilarious, has a potty mouth worse than mine and is one of the nicest authors ever, so I was honoured to be on her YouTube channel talking all about how to go full-time as a writer. You can find the episode here.

Listener rebel this week is David Tapara. I’m almost at the end of the initial tranche rebel stories, I haven’t received any more so I’m not sure if I should continue these listener rebels. If I don’t get any more then I may well close this segment of the show. If you’d like to be a listener rebel, then email your rebel story to rebelauthorpodcast@gmail.com or tweet me @rebelauthorpod

Sacha Black
Hello and welcome back to the rebel author podcast. Today I am with Katie Forrest. Katie is an indie author, time management geek and director of a boutique law firm and mom to a daughter with complex additional needs. She loves reading listening to the rain [me too] and is quite obsessed with cacti. Welcome.

Katie Forrest
Hi, thanks for having me.

Sacha Black
So first of all, just tell me about the cacti.

Katie Forrest
So, okay, here’s the thing I loved cacti before everybody else in the world did so I’m quite annoyed that cacti is really cool now and everybody pretends they’re a cacti fanboy. I went to Arizona years ago and the holiday was really special to me and I just fell in love with cacti came home got a tattoo.

Sacha Black
That’s dedication.

Katie Forrest
I buy as many characters as I can I only wear socks with cacti on for example. Yeah,

Sacha Black
How many are there in your house across real and fake cacti? How many are there? Could you even count?

Katie Forrest
Oh probably hundreds by my bed sheets I’ve got cacti on just yeah my cups have everything yeah everybody obsessed.

Sacha Black
Do you know random facts about them as well? I like

Katie Forrest
No I know nothing. They just look pretty.

Sacha Black
Yeah, there are like some seriously bizarre looking cacti there is a really cool of. Okay, random tangent aside, we are here to talk about time management and you self-professed time management geek and you are also writing a book about time management. So tell me tell me about your writing. Tell me about your journey. Tell me how you got to where you are.

Katie Forrest
Sure. Okay. So I’m one of those typical people always wanted to be a writer. As a kid I was up in my bedroom writing, not going outside playing. So always been a complete geek and then life got busy. And so I didn’t write for years and years and years. And then at the end of 2017, I realized this is crazy. I have got to just make the commitment because my life is never going to calm down. So I need to just make it a priority. And so I made that decision and to 2017 published 11 books in 2018. And just kind of short books, little.

Sacha Black
It was 11 I’m trying to pick myself up off the floor anybody that can can publish at that rate. I just I bow at your feet. I feel so unbelievably slowing in comparison but yeah, tell me all the secrets.

Katie Forrest
There’s lots of hacks and things and I am a quick writer, but that is just a strength I’ve got I’m not saying any of the words are any good.

Sacha Black
So you’re writing a time management book. How did how did that happen?

Katie Forrest
Lots of people were asking how I was managing to write and publish fairly quickly, while working a full time job and raising my daughter, so I kind of just started thinking there is an interest out there. And I’ve always been obsessed with time management. So if you look at my bookshelf, they are just full of time management books, but I don’t necessarily think those ideas are meant for creatives, very often it’s kind of management speak. So I wanted to do something with creatives in mind.

Sacha Black
That’s it. So, so tell me then what does good time management look like?

Katie Forrest
Okay, and so to me, there are three components really. So living a life that’s in line with your areas of focus. I don’t say priorities because priority is singular. That’s a mistake that we make quite often we can only have one priority, but we can have several areas of focus and time management will let you live a life that is actually in alignment with it.

Sacha Black
Let’s just stop. Hang on one second because my brain is exploding already. Wow, that’s a new way of thinking about it. Yeah, wow my I just need a minute because my head is erupting. Nobody has ever said that to me and nobody has ever talked about focus or priority in that way I think that is fascinating. So is that the crux of your of kind of the shape of your book because because I yeah I mean what we are told to prioritize always constantly prioritize prioritize prioritize and but but but just yet no sorry carry on. I’m just waffling because I might I’m having a like a an epiphany right now live on this podcast. Thank you. Thank you so much.

Katie Forrest
Yeah, but priority thing is big for me. We just can’t have so many we just can’t have 10 priorities how on earth do you then decide what to do with everything as a priority? So I prefer to look at it as areas of focus.

Sacha Black
How many are we allowed?

Katie Forrest
How many areas of focus as many as you want, things are going to get more complicated the more you’ve got, but very often the areas of focus would be your writing career, your day job if you’ve got one, your family life, your self care, and probably some kind of community involvement, maybe religious activity or something. I think they tend to be the core groups that people have bought. Yeah, you can have as many as you want.

Sacha Black
I feel like you’ve just given me permission to do all the things I’m sorry, yes. do carry on. Sorry. I know I interrupted but it was it was worth it.

Katie Forrest
No, it’s fine. I was I was saying that time management has got three kind of core elements to me. The second is clarity around what to do and why you’re doing it? And the third is boundaries, boundaries in place for yourself and for other people.

Sacha Black
Okay, and so I think the second one is probably self-explanatory in terms of having clarity on your goals.

Katie Forrest
Yeah, pretty much. So you’ve got 24 hours in a day, how can you attempt to manage them if you don’t know what you’re trying to achieve with them?

Sacha Black
Yeah, yeah. So talk to me about boundaries, because you know that I’m raising all my eyebrows because I feel like I’m about to get scolded for my behavior now.

Katie Forrest
Set boundaries, I think there’s two senses, two boundaries, boundaries that you have for yourself and boundaries that you have towards other people. So a boundary for yourself very often is something like Facebook. Do you have boundaries in place in terms of how much you’re accessing social media, how much you’re allowing yourself to do that? And maybe that’s not your particular distraction thing. Maybe that’s just mine. But you will probably Have your own whatever it might be. So have you set up some boundaries around that? And then boundaries around other people is how often are you allowing yourself to be interrupted? Are you letting people take up your days to run them around and take their calls and do things that they wouldn’t expect you to do? If you were working in a typical job, they wouldn’t call you out for half a day to counsel them or run from around or just go for coffee. So have you made those boundaries clear, in terms of this is my work time and sometimes I’m going to need to say no to you.

Sacha Black
So I nodded along to everything you just said because I am terrible for this. You are right. I think there’s something really key that you said that I allow myself to be interrupted. And how do I stop that? How does anybody stop that? Because obviously we have… and I don’t know if this is because I’m a mother or perhaps it’s augmented because I’m a mother, but I have guilt if I don’t respond, or if I don’t pick up the phone, or if I put my phone on Do Not Disturb or if I, you know, I don’t help or I don’t go and look at the new car that somebody wants to buy or whatever. And I feel bad and it’s distracting it invades my brain. So how do we stop allowing ourselves to be interrupted?

Katie Forrest
Sure. So I’m, I’m sure what this does affect both genders. Various research to show that this is particularly something that females feel quite keenly, but we are nurturers and we want to put everybody’s needs before ours so that there definitely is truth in what you’re saying in your experience. And that isn’t to say that men don’t feel the same as well. I’m sure they do. Honestly, in a situation that you’re describing where people are, presumably on your side and want you to achieve and want to help you. I think sometimes it’s about a really candid conversation with them saying these blocks at time need to be work, focus, please don’t invite me somewhere, please don’t call me because I will feel as though I’ve got to answer your call to go out with you. So ask for their support. That assumes that they are supportive influences in your life. And if they’re not, if they’re people who are trying to take more of your time than they really deserve or entitled to, then it’s going to be a little bit more hardball. And I’m a huge fan of Oprah saying that and there was a complete sentence I probably quote every day to somebody very often myself. So just saying no is absolutely fine.

Sacha Black
I’ve never heard that before. No is a complete sentence. I love that. That’s amazing. And, yeah, I think it’s, I think that’s really interesting. And one of the things that really hit home with what you said there was saying, please don’t call me because I will feel like I have to pick up. And that is so true that that really is the crux of it and actually just communicating that now and explaining that when you text me or when you call me, even if I have, you know, the Do Not Disturb on or whatever. If you have if you have Macs and iPhones, everything’s connected, it all populates across. It’s true. I do feel like that, and actually just having that being truthful and saying I, you know, I feel like I have to pick up an answer that places the onus of the problem on yourself and not to the other person. And I think that’s probably quite key in not letting your family feel like they are the problem, I suppose.

Katie Forrest
Yeah, sure. I think for most of us writing is taking time away from our loved ones. Yeah. So we always need to be respectful of that and make sure we’re balancing giving them the time that they need. Yeah, yeah, definitely.

Sacha Black
Absolutely. Okay. Yep. So, Tell, tell. Tell me about the phrase busy work, because I’ve heard you say this. I say this all the time. I am busy. I’m really busy. I’m too busy. I can’t, you know, blah, blah, blah. And, and I think that we all fall prey to this. So can you can you explain what busy work is? What “busy” work is in air quotes? versus what productive work is?

Katie Forrest
Yes. Yeah. The challenge here is that busy work is genuine work. so busy work is something that needs to get done. So if you need to unload the dishwasher, of course that’s Yeah, you’ve got to do it. These are all they’re not imaginary jobs. And that’s what is so difficult about them. Ultimately busy work is not your priority work, it’s not work that is directly going to move you forward. And when you’re looking at what you’re doing and whether it is productive work or busy work, one of the questions I asked myself is, is this something that only I can do? And if the answer is no, it’s probably closer to being busy work. And that isn’t to suggest that you need to be outsourcing everything apart from your core areas of focus, which for a writer are probably going to be writing and not much else. Pretty much everything else could be outsourced. I’m not saying go out and do that. But that question will help you stay on track in terms of is this productive, or busy work?

Sacha Black
Yeah, and I think it also helps you to understand what is urgent because I know I really struggle with my inbox. My inbox is the bane of all of my problems because I use it a bit like a to do list. You have that horrible red notification that’s like danger to do list. And obviously it’s psychological that’s why Facebook use it as a red notification because it’s, you know, alert, you must go and do it. And it’s it’s color psychology, I suppose. But nine times out of 10 the things in there are not urgent, but they feel urgent. So I definitely think there is truth and logic and I have to cling to what you’re saying. Yes, absolutely. And if someone wants to evaluate and change how they’re using their time, with a view to being more productive, what where the hell do they start?

Katie Forrest
So I think it comes down to being totally honest with yourself about how you’re currently spending time. So you can look back over your last week or your last few weeks and you can ask yourself questions of how productive have I been? How much progress Have I made? The difficulty with that is that relies on your memory. And all of us are working with memories that aren’t perfect, more flawed for numbers, mine is pretty rubbish. So the way that I suggest is to keep a time log for a period of seven days and actually record your time as you’re spending it. And then at the end of those seven days, look back and have a much more accurate log of, wow, I spent three hours that day on Instagram, and that was not an area of my focus right now. So I would suggest diving in with a time log. Some people will have a real kind of, I don’t want to do that sounds really hard. That sounds really boring or whatever. So the questions are certainly a start questioning how will you have spend your time but you will get more of an accurate answer if you’re prepared to keep a time log for a few days.

Sacha Black
And so what do what should they look for in that what what patterns should they try and spot in order to be able to then think about how to do things differently?

Katie Forrest
So for the person who has kept a time log, yeah, need to analyze that. They need to know what their goals are. So I asked people, what is your milestone goal? And very often, that is, I want to become a full-time writer. And in order to do that, I think I need to release three books in the next year or whatever it might be. And once they’ve got those goals set out, they can look back at the time log and see did my activity actually represent what my goals are? Did it move me closer to them an end just being brutally honest with and I think a lot of us know if we look at a time log and it’s very black and white. A lot of us can see I spent too much time on social media. I spent too much time doing errands that I didn’t need to do and whatever it might be.

Sacha Black
So I will confess to having done this prior to the podcast, because I’m nothing if not an experiment us and Katie was brutally honest with me. But I know it’s fine. I needed it. I needed the slap bump. No. So what what did it show? Okay, so the the time log that I used had 15 minutes slots, which does sound scary, but actually, it ended up being quite easy, and I didn’t have to fill it in every 15 minutes. If, for example, I was doing deep work and I worked for two hours editing. Then at the end of those two hours, I just filled in editing. Now the interesting thing was that I put in what I achieved. So I would write down how many words I’d got done in that section or whatever. And that has also helped me to understand how long tasks will take. And that little things like my mornings were always ruined by my inbox, there’s a theme here guys. So I’ve done something small, as small as taking my mail app off of my home screen and putting it onto a different home screen. And it’s a tiny, tiny, tiny tip, but it has made the world a difference because I no longer see it when I pick up my phone in the morning to check how late I’m going to be for the school rub. And, and my I don’t check it now until I come back and I can choose to do it. So it’s, it’s little things like that. You can see patterns in your behavior. Oh, every morning, the first thing I do is check my site every morning. The first thing I do is look at Facebook or you know, whatever. So yeah, I think this is an amazing task for everybody to do. So let’s let’s talk about mindset and productivity. Do you think that there’s a shift a person needs to make in order to be genuinely more productive?

Katie Forrest
Yes, definitely. This might be quite controversial. But I,

Sacha Black
We like controversial.

Katie Forrest
I think the idea of us as tortured artists do need to drink whiskey and smoke cigars and wait for the Muse to turn up. I think that is one of the biggest disservice that we have kind of done to ourselves as creatives. So, the mindset shift really is realizing that this is a business and whatever your day job is, or used to be, you probably didn’t get the option of saying I really don’t feel like writing these reports today. I really don’t feel like driving this truck today. Whatever you have to go you have to turn off and I think the mindset shift is realizing you have to do the same for your writing. If it’s a business to you not just a hobby

Sacha Black
Yeah, there’s a there’s a reoccurring theme on this podcast where I tend to say suck it up Princess, but it’s kind of true because that was one of the shocking revelations. I now work write full time. Well, I say write. I worked myself full-time. And one of the things the shocking realizations is that when you are employed by the man, you if you have an off day you are still going to get paid the same amount of money at the end of the day. That’s not going to happen anymore. And and so there is an element of suck it up baby You know, I don’t feel well today. I’ve turned up I’ve still done editing, I’m still doing a podcast. Because if I don’t, you know, we we don’t earn. And I think the other thing that you’ve you’ve mentioned is honesty. With yourself?

Katie Forrest
Yes.

Sacha Black
Because I think that’s a real mindset shift. Because if you really want to change your habits and be more productive, the only way you can do that is by being brutally honest with yourself. And I think that is a huge, huge shift in in somebody’s mindset. And hit me with some easy wins. For somebody who wants to be more productive, what can they do?

Katie Forrest
Okay, so the most common piece of advice I would give to a writer is get your words done first. This is going to be life changing for the majority of people listening, if they will just give it a try and get up and get your writing done first. I am not saying sleep less people hear about and they imagine that they’ve got to get up at three o’clock in the morning and they’re going to be exhausted. I’m not suggesting that but if you could maybe get up half an hour earlier, and go to bed half an hour earlier. So you’re losing those sleep, but you’ve got 30 minutes quiet time to get those words done. That’s an incredible feeling to take through the rest of the day. Other easy tips.. People focus quite often on technology and smartphones and oh my goodness, we’re so distracted because of all of this stuff. Actually, I think they’re some of the easiest things to tackle. So as you have said, move your distracting up away from your home screen, or on install them from your phone. Two thirds of people have never changed the notification settings on their smartphone.

Sacha Black
No way.

Katie Forrest
So if you’re one of those two thirds of people, that would be a great first go in there. And if you’re getting notifications for Etsy, and eBay and Amazon and a gazillion other apps, you probably don’t need all of them ping ping pinging you all day long. So that would be a really great first actionable tip.

Sacha Black
Yeah, that’s fantastic. And I can’t believe that I turned mine off or probably two years ago, and it does make a radical difference. Although you do still have to be conscious of your app usage, because you can very easily revert back to. Well, I’ll just have a quick click and then an hours gone by in a black hole of Instagram stories.

Katie Forrest
And the other thing you can do with that becomes the problem is you can set up limit. I’m an iPhone user. So I don’t know about all the phones, but I would imagine all smartphones have similar functions. You can limit particular apps or categories of apps. So I have a 45 minutes a day limit on my social media apps. And that’s enough time like if I’m on there longer than 45 minutes. I know I’m wasting time let’s be honest.

Sacha Black
Yeah, but there you go. They’re being honest because I’d like to know what if miss something, I’m like freaking out but I’m like, No, come on. Come on Saxha. Because let’s be realistic, 45 minutes is nearly an hour. What can you do in an hour? You know, you’re so right. But it is these embedded habits that we need to break. Let’s do Just explored the distraction thing a bit because there’s kind of two things but there are some apps that you can use I use one on my Mac called self control, sort of a spade shape with a skull on it. But there’s also other software called Freedom software, I think, and that you can use which basically puts a time lock it stops you accessing social media sites, or whatever sites you choose, that are distracting. And on your computers, but lets, you know, distractions are our distraction. So what about things like the Freewrite so for those that don’t know about the free, right, it’s a very expensive piece of analog technology, essentially. It’s a… It’s a modern typewriter, essentially and modern keyboard with no internet, more or less and then so you will have to complete distraction free writing, but it’s like $600 or something. Do you think that people should get another computer with no Wi Fi or is it pointless? I mean, is it just a matter of training ourselves?

Katie Forrest
It’s going to be different for each person. My personal opinion is, there’s a level of destruction that we all kind of get into through the day. But if you feel like distraction is a bigger issue for you than it might be for the average person, then I would ask you why. So what what are you trying to avoid? So if you’re getting distracted, you’re trying to avoid some kind of pain or discomfort. What is that? And if there is a deeper root, I personally don’t imagine that any particular device is going to solve that for you because maybe then you’ll just start hoovering or something like there’s there’s a million ways to be distracted. I’m sure you’d find others.

Sacha Black
yeah. And again, it’s about it’s we’re cycling back. We are cycling back, everybody. Come to the fact of being honest with yourself and saying, honestly, what is the priority? Content is king when you’re a writer, and if you are not producing words, you ain’t gonna be earning money at the end of the day. And but actually, that’s quite an interesting point about other problems and deeper issues. Are there any people who shouldn’t focus on time management and productivity hacks?

Katie Forrest
Yes, certainly. So people in what I call crisis mode, and very often a person in crisis mode does start looking at time management because I feel as if life is out of control. But it isn’t the right time. Again, just in my opinion, I don’t think it’s the right time. And I would define a crisis as being something that is short term, and unexpected. So the example I tend to use is having a baby if you’re pregnant and you’ll know you’re going to have a baby. Having a newborn baby will be so life changing as we both know. But it isn’t a crisis, it was expected you knew it was going to happen if there are any complications with mom’s health or baby’s health, including things like postnatal depression, but absolutely, that new baby becomes a crisis period. And when you’re in a crisis mode, you need to just look after yourself.

Sacha Black
Yeah. And I think that is a really good point. Because we, well, I say, when I say we, you probably don’t do this, but I constantly beat myself up for not achieving what I wanted to achieve, or only doing 2000 words instead of editing 3000 words or you know, and actually, it’s wildly unhelpful, being unkind to yourself.

Katie Forrest
And I do the same.

Sacha Black
Yeah. But it’s a really hard habit to break, isn’t it? It really is. Yeah. And so any tips for doing the opposite and embedding good habits.

Katie Forrest
Sure, and so research suggests that it takes 21 days to build any habit. So repetition is the key here. So decide what you’re going to do and make it part of your daily routine. But anytime that you can habit stock is going to be really, really helpful. So that is where you choose a new habit that you want to develop, and you link it to something you’re already doing. So if you want to do daily gratitude, you could say, I’m going to do this after I brush my teeth, and then the brushing my teeth will trigger the new habit that you’re trying to build.

Sacha Black
Oh, that’s really interesting. I’ve not heard of that before. Oh, yeah, that’s that is fascinating. And I drink coffee every day. So I’m just thinking about what I can do to connect coffee my life source to new habits. And let’s, let’s talk about burnout because burnout is a real issue, I think for a lot of creatives, and I think a bit like being a crisis and looking at time management when really actually we just need to rest. What good habits or time productive time habits can we embed that will prevent burnout, I suppose or help us through it.

Katie Forrest
I think really the key here is to decide on a pace that is realistic for you and maintainable. So, if you know that you can write 2000 words a day, don’t put yourself into a situation where you’re going to have to write 6000 every day, but that is going to lead to burnout.

Sacha Black
Yeah. Yeah.

Katie Forrest
Recognize your limits and try to avoid comparisonitis Really?

Sacha Black
Ooh yeah, that little bitch and yeah, I and and I suppose if you if you want to push yourself, you could always add 10% to your goal to your daily goal.

Katie Forrest
Yeah, sure. And just it’s just checking in with yourself. Does this feel good? Is this something that Keep doing because we’re all in this for the long game. Hopefully we’re not thinking I’m going to do this one book and I’m going to make my mega gazillions of pounds and retire. So if you’re in it for the long term, you’ve got to be doing something you can get up and do day after day after day after day.

Sacha Black
Yeah. And, and so, how far through your book, are you? Because obviously, you are going to be publishing a book on time management.

Katie Forrest
I am Yes. So I think I’ve got about 20,000 words at the moment. And it just keeps getting longer. So I’m not quite sure how long it’s going to be. But there’s so much stuff to put in it.

Sacha Black
Do you have a target? a target month you’d like to release in? November, November? Okay, so then for listeners, I will make sure we release this podcast around that time so that everybody can purchase the book. Do you have a title?

Katie Forrest
And I think it’s just going to be Time Management for Writers.

Sacha Black
Okay, perfect. So where can listeners find out more about you?

Katie Forrest
Sure. So they can go across to my website, which is Katiefofrest.com. And that’s Katie, Katie, ie and forest with two R’s. And if they go to Katieforrest.com/timelog. Then they can actually get the template time log that I suggest people fill in for a week. And I also have a Facebook group. It’s time management for writers by Katie forest, and it’s super small, but I post a little daily tip in there.

Sacha Black
Okay, perfect. So there is one last question, which is the question we ask all of our guests of our look at me talking about myself as if I’m more than one person. And this is the Rebel Author Podcast. So tell me about a time that you unleashed your inner rebel.

Katie Forrest
I really struggled with this question.

Sacha Black
Everybody does believe me, I get panicked emails stricken authors. Oh my god, I gotta rebel. I’m like, darling, you are you are.

Katie Forrest
So similar thing that kept coming to mind when I was thinking of how I could answer this is it’s just that my whole life has been a rebel. Which sounds ridiculous, but I can’t really think of any specifics. But what I did do was I was brought up by a very working class family where I was pretty smart. And I was told my options leaving school were to work in a factory or work in a shop, because that was just a community that I was raised by no criticism to them at all. And I just kind of pissed all over that really and just made it up as I went along every single day since so I guess. That’s it.

Sacha Black
You are a true, true rebel. Your rebel is in your very soul and I love it. So thank you very much for your time. Thank you to everybody listening and thank you very much to patrons. We’re like siblings: we both wana get shit done and somewhere deep down (like REALLY deep) we love each other. But mostly, we kick seven shades of shit out of each other while stealing one another’s greatest posessions (time) and taddle tailing about who got what done on the ‘to do’ list. We need to be more productive because right now, we’re a mess.

We both know it, though neither of us will admit it. It might possibly, probably be the reason I have 22,000 words of a novel on ‘How to Be Productive’ and it’s also – ironically – the reason I’ve neither finished it, nor published it.

Sigh.

Most of you will know I left my job back in May. It’s been… Turbulent shall we say. Something akin to a giant steroid-injected rollercoaster of ‘da-fuck-am-i-doing-itis’ and blindingly hysterical euphoria.

In my more lucid moments, I’m come to realise how much I’ve got to re-learn. Like, time management.

You’d think, what with being a grown ass woman of thirty something years, that time management would come naturally by now. After all, I’m a driven and ambitious lady, I’m a kickass lion-roar-for-breakfast kinda gal. There’s no fucking about, I get shit done.

Except that, apparently, I don’t anymore.

I mean, I did. I had to in order to get where I am. I didn’t quit my job with zero clues where my income was coming from. I knew… sorry, KNOW, where my income is coming. And yet, for some reason, I work and work and work, and shit is not getting done.

It’s a lesson. It’s a revelation. It’s a fucking paradox.

If In Doubt, Read

I don’t take this stuff lying down. In an attempt to ‘sort my life out’ I’ve been reading self-help books by the dozen. Not only have they helped shift my mindset, I’ve had somewhat of what you’d call an epiphany on the time management front.

The specific book in question today is Girl, Stop Apologising by Rachel Hollis go get in on Amazon UK and Amazon USA.

Something major stuck out to me.

Get Rid of Your To Do List

The first is that I’m going to do away with my to do list. I know. Shocking. But fear not my productivity ninjas, I’m not, NOT having a list. Christ, I’d hyperventilate a lung out if I did that. What I am doing though, is reframing it.

I’m finding more and more that this working for yourself business is 90% mindset, 10% gritty persperation. The trick to mindset is all universe, maraccas and philosophical fooey for another day. The tangible trick Ms Hollis gave me produced a slack-jawed Sacha manically flipping the pages and drooling over the simple and blindingly obvious technique.

Henceforth, chuck your ‘to do’ lists in the fuck-it bucket. Why?

“The average woman’s to-do list is approximately 319 items long, which means you’re never going to get through it anyway.” Rachel Hollis, Girl, Stop Apologising p.189

Now, whether or not she’s being sarcastic on the ‘319’, I’ll never know. But honestly? It doesn’t matter. It struck a chord with me because my to do list actually is about 319 items long. Now, for the last lord knows how many years, I’ve prided myself on these ridiculous ‘to do’ lists. Claiming that having a longer list drives me on harder. And sure, there’s some truth in that…

There’s also a royal waft of Horse Shit. Can you smell it?

Let’s be real here, folks.

Where’s it left me? With a shitty broken mindset and a serious case of bitchin burnout.

The Results List i.e. How to Be More Productive

What y’all need, is a results list.

Don’t be narrowing your eyes at me, I see you all squinty and sceptical because how in the shitsticks can a ‘results list’ which sounds suspiciously like a ‘to do’ list make you more productive?

Stop that.

Listen up.

“…if you’re anything like me [and I am like her] back in the day, you’ll spend your entire work time doing the easiest items on your to-do list, simply so you can have some items crossed out.” Rachel Hollis, Girl, Stop Apologising p.189

Sweet Jesus of small mercies, I am so like her. That juicy dopamine-nectar fills my body hard when I cross off a task. Nnnnggh. It’s glorious, it’s addictive. It’s also totally fucking pointless.

Responding to 80 emails might make my anxiety feel better, but it does fuck-nothing for my bank balance. So here’s me calling myself out. No more working on other people’s agendas, no more ‘busy’ work.

What are you [Sacha] going to create today that will take you closer to achieving your goals?

Because that’s what this is about. That’s why I left my job, it’s why I moved house, changed my son’s school, risked everything to follow the dream.

What’s The Difference Between a Results List and a To Do List?

I’ll tell you.

A ‘to do’ might contain things like:

Upload new versions of Keepers to Kobo

Reduce inbox to below 100 unread emails

Schedule tweets

Do more AMS ads

And so on. All important work. All work I have to do. But none of it is taking me closer to my goal. I can’t sell more books unless I write more books. I can’t sell courses if they’re not written.

A results list should be highly specific:

Create 3 slides and write the transcript for those three slides on your conflict course

Record those three slides

Write 1000 words of Anatomy of Prose

Those three tasks would actually get me closer to being able to publish and sell my writing course. Once those things are done I can do the ‘busy’ work. Results are specific and push you toward your goal. Maybe yours would be ‘write 2000 words before 2pm’. Maybe it’s ‘edit four chapters by lunch tomorrow’. Doesn’t matter. But they should be project specific and tangible. Don’t leave yourself any room for backing out or saying you’ve ‘half done it’

You can’t half do 2000 words. And hush now all the smart arses saying 1000 words is half of 2000. I KNOW THAT, GET BACK IN YOUR PEDANTIC BOX.

The point is, either you write 2k or you don’t. End of.

If you want to achieve a goal, it’s not just about working hard, it’s about working hard on the right things. Apparently, I only just learnt that.

I’ve been interventioned. Intervened? Whatever. I’ve been told to back away from the keyboard and sit my plump ass down.

You know when you watch movies and a group of friends actually stage an intervention and you laugh because you’re like HAHA that shit never happens, and it would definitely not happen to me.

Well it did.

Believe me, post its and actual man sized flip charts were involved.
But before I tell you the story, let me explain… as the year draws to a close, I’ve been getting a wickle bit reflective. Especially because next year is going to be a big year.

I hit the big 3.0, I’ll publish for the first and hopefully second and third time, and there are some other BIG secrets I can’t reveal yet.

But for now, another year has past and while lots of things have been achieved, my dreams have not been met… YET. But instead of being disheartened it force fed me petrol and made the fire inside me burn hotter than a million Kelvin.

Let the reflectioning begin…

My friends, lets call them Black Hole (yes there is a story behind this, no I will not tell you…<del>today</del> ever. Cough.) and Tasmanian Devil (TD) for short.

Black Hole and TD were concerned.

LESSON ONE – I’M A HEAD BURYING BITCH

I was… being abnormal, they said. Acting strange, off colour. It made me raise an eyebrow, because my strange scale and theirs ain’t even close to the same league. So I must have been behaving really fucking weirdly.

Anyway, they decided a dinner was required, they were going to help me sort my writing life out. No laptop required. *my eyebrow inched up another notch*

Dinner was served, eaten and barely digested before the flip charts were pulled out.

We agreed I had a problem. I was overwhelmed. Despite strategic planning, enough spreadsheets to drown a tech god and To Do Lists that made George RR Martin’s manuscripts look like short stories, I was STILL overwhelmed and it wouldn’t go away.

We stuck my goals on flip chart and then they ‘suggested’ I lower my word count goals.

Um. No.

No really, they said, lower the word count goal, give yourself more time. The logic was irrefutable… damn their sense making logic mumbo jumbo.

But I’m not sure they realised what they were saying… Asking a writer to lower their word count is like making a kid stand in the worlds largest sweet shop with their hands handcuffed while wearing a ball gag. Don’t they know I hear voices? They whisper things, scream dialogue if I don’t write it down. They rattle my brain until I have so much static I vomit words…literally.

A silent war raged over the dinner table. Death by squinty-eyed rage darts, jaws clenched and flexed violently enough to crush cars and there was an excess of hand yanks through hair.

Even after I agreed to extend my word counts the pressure hadn’t lifted. Word counts weren’t the problem. Then I leant back in my chair and realised I’d been covering another post it goal. Turns out when they asked about that bad boy I nearly broke down.

My subconscious had been covering the one thing I didn’t want to talk about. Insert epiphany as I realise this was most definitely not the first time I’d done this! I always joke about burying my head. But apparently I do. Awkward.

But the intervention and head burying is only one of many things I’ve learnt about my writing this year.

What have you learnt about your writing, writing process or mindset? Let me know in the comments below.

LESSON TWO – I’M NOT SUPERWOMAN AKA LIMITS & BARRIERS

It’s not that I have superhero syndrome, I mean, I only fly on Tuesday nights, but apparently I can’t do everything. I tried. HARD. Like lived off 4 hours sleep and drank enough coffee to sink my coal covered heart into a cardiac specialist consultants room, #truestory.

But it’s less about doing everything and realising that I don’t have to do everything. Sounds like one of those obvious dumbass things you should know, but apparently I didn’t. This year has taught me I don’t have to be good at everything. I can be excellent at some things and just okay at others, AND fuck me, THAT’S OKAY. No one died, no one drowned in a vat of self-loathing because they got a B+.

If I want to be excellent at writing, I can only be mediocre at something else. That’s life baby and it was a fucking cut glass pill to swallow, hurt like fuck to go down, but at least I only had to learn that lesson once.

This ones dedicated to my amazing hypnotist friend.

LESSON THREE – NO MAN IS AN ISLAND OR SOME BULLSHIT LIKE THAT

See, I could learn everything, I could learn to chisel diamonds into spears, the location of every dolphin on the planet, the number of wooden forks located in Romania, wait… I mean I could learn to code, learn to migrate my website, and master the nuances of formatting and all the other detailed bullshit that goes with authoring. But I don’t have to. Maybe I shouldn’t have to, because what I want to do, ALL I want to do is write books.

I dont have to be amazing at everything. I just have to be amazing at writing. And I’m not. Yet. Because I pissed about with loads of other bullshit, stressed my curly little head off when I should’ve just asked for help.

Wait what? I can ask for help? WTF… I CAN ACTUALLY ASK FOR HELP?

FFS. I will chain myself to the laptop and whip myself with writing sprints later for this one later.

In my defence, the idiot part of my brain thought that paying someone else to do something for me was failing. Well fuck that. It’s not failing. Its efficient and more importantly a better use of my very fucking limited time. Why struggle through weeks of stress and not writing when I could just pay someone else to do it in a few minutes?

Publishing books, even as an indie, is a team effort, I’d do jolly well to remember it.

Note to self: Yeah dumbass, you won’t make that mistake again will you? Dick.

LESSON FOUR – INTRO, EXTRO ALL THE ‘TRO

I am both introvert and extrovert. Greedy bitch eh! But it’s true. Put me in a small group of friends and I’ll seem like the only extrovert. But put me in a room full of new people, or suggest something social without my nearest and dearest and I break out in awkward social STD’s. I shrink away from most social events, choosing instead to spend time with myself and my stories, and I need that to regenerate.

BUT, and it’s a big but, I definitely think externally. Unlike introverted thinkers, I need to do things with my hands, work shit out, bounce ideas off other people and scrawl stuff with my grubby mitts.

If I have a book problem I can’t just write through it like some authors, I have to stop and problem solve physically. It’s like my brain is only partially located in my brain, the other half of it firmly resides in my finger tips.

I need to remember this, and know it’s okay. We all have different processes, methods and mechanisms of writing. What works for one, won’t necessarily work for me.

LESSON FIVE – I STILL DON’T HAVE A FREAKING CLUE WHAT I’M DOING

Seriously. Okay, I mean, I’m not walking round slack jawed, goggle eyed, arms hanging like an ape. But I am still regularly fucking my shit up.

One minute I am pantsing the next I am stopping mid book to plot. Sometimes I outline, others I don’t. Sometimes I edit backwards, then I spontaneously edit forwards. The only thing I do consistently is embody complete and utter chaotic spontaneity. It’s like my signature writing perfume. But it’s fucking annoying, and inefficient.

One thing I am sure of, is that my writing processes for fiction is totally different from non-fiction. I still don’t know if I am a plotter or a planner, (somewhere in the middle I suspect) but still, my process is as clear as swamp juice.

I’m like an inebriated kid who just had the training wheels taken off their bike. Almost there, but swerving all over the shitting street. A bit more practice and I might have it sorted. But that’s for next year…!

I really hate January 1st. It’s the ultimate come down. You partied hard the night before, fuelled by booze, contagious enthusiasm and ever more ridiculous resolution promises. The night seemed alive, 2015 was going to be THE year. It’s your year, your time and your chance.

What a load of shit.

Woke up this morning, feeling more bloated and fatter than ever, with a raging hangover and more resolution promises I will break before the end of month. Stepped on the scales, didn’t I?

WHY, did I do that?

Now ELEVEN pounds heavier than I was in August.

Fuck January. Fuck my life.

January 1st – berroca in the morning 11am hangover starting to disappear, better make an effort – healthy yogurt and bagel for breakfast. By 1:45pm I’d eaten chocolate, hated myself for eating it so ate more to console myself.

F***ing January. I’ll start tomorrow!

Looked at the insanity DVD pile with enough hatred to send me straight back to the chocolate drawer for another round of “stuff my face and hate myself some more” I’ll start insanity tomorrow.

Looked at my beautiful treasured Mac laptop lain unused for the entire Christmas break. Not a word written, not a thought for my assignment nor my much in need of an edit WIP. Looked at it, hated on it. Then hated on myself for slacking. I’ll start tomorrow.

Looked at the calendar, only 3 more days off till I go back to work. And the awful realisation I’ve wasted my entire precious Christmas holiday doing sweet fuck all. Something I can’t abide – waste. Spent most of the first week off being ill with a stupid cold I couldn’t rid myself of for a month. Happy to say the last two days have seen it finally bite the dust. But still. I hated on myself some more for behaving like the thing I hate – a waster – sleep is for the weak!

So where did it go? When did I lose my mojo? It’s been gone at least a month. I have no motivation AT ALL. Not to exercise and lose the weight I need to, and not to pick up my technological pen and write.

How do you get motivated when you and your mojo are lost?

Maybe you should tell me tomorrow?!
