Time. That precious commodity no one has. Everything is about time. I bitch about time, ALL THE TIME! But it’s a misnomer. See, if I have time to shovel a chocolate bar… (fine two bars) in my gob, then I can find time to schedule tweets, finish that bloody book, and pin my posts to Pinterest.
I’ve already talked about choices, and the fact reaching goals is all about choice in my post a couple of weeks ago that talks about Setting Unrealistic Goals in Order to Achieve Unbelievable Outcomes.
Everyone knows Twitter is in the top 5 tools for boosting traffic, but scheduling tweets is another matter. I have tweets scheduled up to 6 months in advance. Yeah, really, and no, it’s not because I’m super organised. Once I write a post, I use a program to create template tweets and then schedule them for the next 6 months. It’s a pain at the time, but seriously, when you sit back on Monday’s, knowing you don’t have to tweet every 4 seconds you’ll be thanking me.
So how do you actually schedule tweets? And you know, add all the links and pretty pictures and stuff?! I’m going to tell you.
Like any social media anything, there are a plethora of tools you can use. Some are better than others, the three big ones that immediately spring to mind are:

They are a much of a muchness, although twitter ads requires you to put card details in, which it won’t charge unless you start a paid campaign to promote tweets. Buffer has slightly more social media options i.e. you can schedule tweets, pins and posts to more media outlets, however, you can only do it if you’re willing to pay.
That leaves us with hootsuite, and the program I use. You can pay a subscription, which actually, I am looking into, and that gives you more than the free version. But I have been using the free version for months and its been more than adequate.
Rather than write out a step by step instruction, I thought I would try something new. I have recorded a video of my computer screen whilst I scheduled a tweet for this post. I hope it works, and I haven’t raced off, I have a tendency to speak REALLY quick.
Here’s the video:
Finally, here are the top tips I have for scheduling tweets:
ONE
Schedule as far in advance as you can – I try for 6 months of tweets, then you don’t have to worry about anything other than RTs for months. Until you run out of course, and then you have to spend a whole evening doing it again! But still.
TWO
Remember you can schedule old posts too. I often have a little session scheduling old posts using the hashtags so that I drive more traffic to them. Just because they are old, doesn’t mean you can’t continue to share them.
THREE
Add photos to your tweets. Here’s 4 Easy Steps To Seriously Awesome Photos. I use the same photo for my blog as I do on twitter and Pinterest – it keeps the branding intact. The smaller the photo file the better – any photos you add will take up characters. But photos in tweets are shown to boost shares and RTs.
FOUR
Don’t forget hashtags and links. There are a plethora of hashtags out there, #MondayBlogs, #SundayBlogShare, #ArchiveDay, #wwwblogs and Rosie’s #TuesdayBookBlog are among my fave hashtags. Here’s a post highlighting 50 tricks to twitter.
FIVE
Save as draft so that you can use it repeatedly, and make sure you click ‘retain copy’ otherwise your template will disappear.
SIX
Schedule tweets around popular times of the day. Each social media outlet has its most popular times, which google can tell you. But, knowing when to tweet is difficult because you could be in one part of the world but your audience is from another part of the world. But go for the most logical times you can think of. I have most success at the following times:
8-10:30am – people sitting down at work (especially Monday’s) and checking twitter before getting on with the day job.
11:45 – 13:30 lunchtimes (people on breaks at work)
16:45- 18:00 Post work – checks on route to the car, train/bus home
19:30 onwards – this is when most people look at blogs and social media – evening times.
SEVEN
If you have time, try to vary the wording of your tweets a tiny bit. I don’t always have time, but people can see it as spam if you just post the same wording continuously.
EIGHT
Use numbers in your tweets. Research shows that using numbers increases interaction. As does the word ‘YOU’. Finally, you don’t always have to just use the title of your post, use big emotion words and catchy marketing headlines. I know, I know, it feels like selling your soul using this type of phrasing. But is it really? I mean, do you want to boost your traffic or not? And if you are writing good material then it doesn’t matter if your twitter title is a bit showy offish? Be proud.
Jon Morrow – if you sign up to his website, has an awesome guide to creating headlines. Since I used his method, I can’t even quantify the increase in traffic. I really recommend the application of his method.

Thank you for the #SundayBlogShare shoutout! I never schedule my tweets so this was really useful – I’m going to give it a try!
Awesome hope you find it useful, I have to say I’d prefer the ability to schedule loads of tweets at once but not for 10 quid a month!
I know what you mean – it’s difficult not to spend money to promote the blog… Ooh, there’s an idea for a post this week!
That would be a good post, I would love to know how to promote more without a cost being incurred ?
I’m on it!
Awesome I’ll catch it Sunday ? it’s my reading day ? I’m excited
I do scedule blogs if I’m minding Little G & won’t be online. The best way to grow followers is to chat…. and post dadt stuff….. oh, and I’m on various radio/TV tweetalongs also…I sell a lot of books that way. In the end, it’s YOUR personality that grows followers…. in my case…
Wow carol I’d be interested to know your method of selling books through Twitter I don’t have the first clue how to do that ?
Fantastic post, Sacha! Yes, I am using Hootsuite too for scheduling my tweets. That gives me the freedom to simply tweet spontaneously when I feel like it. I also use the free version. There is another program called TweetAdder. It is like Hootsuite but there is something special about that. Your tweets don’t get lost but repeat forever. They don’t get lost once posted. You can choose the order or let them run ramdonly. I used it for some time. But for some reason something happened with that system and I couldn’t log in anymore… no help or support… I couldn’t find out about the problem and stopped using it. But it is really a fantastic idea.
Thank you Erika, that’s good to hear you already use it. Do you use any other platforms? I am looking to find another platform that allows you to schedule the same tweet multiple times over multiple days – so if you find that let me know!!
This TweetAdder – do you mean your drafted tweets repeat – ie it’s schedules them repeatedly? Can you choose when they go live? Shame it stopped working. I might have to do a search for that function ?
Yes, once you scheduled them they simply repeat themselves (of course you can stop that if you want at a point). You can add or remove tweets from the list. You can let them run randomly or in a specific order and can set the time of intervals. You get a free version for I think 30 days. Then you need to pay about 19 $ as far as I can remember. I did not find (and search for) another platform yet.
Ok, awesome thank you for the info I shall go investigate further 😀
Yes, check it out ☺?
This post is perfect timing since I’m starting to look into growing my blog and reaching out more. I went and did a check twitter is where I get the second most views from.
Thanks for the post Sacha!
No problems glad you find it useful ?? let me know what happens with your traffic and if it helps
Great tips and thanks for the shout out re the #TuesdayBookBlog hashtag.
Your welcome Rosie ?? it’s a great hashtag ?
I totally could be better at this. I have it on my To-do list to schedule a bunch of posts over the next few months, but I usually opt to do something else–like writing blog posts! 🙂 This was a nice little kick in the rear to get with it! Well done! (Couldn’t watch the vid–because I’m at work!) 😉
Ha! Me too! Meh works so inconsiderate getting in the way of blog watching! ? I’m sure you know how to do it already.
🙂 Yes, but I’m no expert. Sometimes other people have a trick up their sleeve where I palm my forehead in disbelief over the precious seconds I had previously lost week after week, month after month! (P.S. I’m getting ridiculously excited about this Bloggers Bash. One of your followers mentioned the Premier–so I’m checking it out. Do you know if others will be overnighting there? I might call them and ask them nicely for a special discount.)
Yes I think quite a few people will be in hotels – there seems to be a lot of European people saying they are coming so I imagine there will be. If that’s the case next year we may try to negotiate a discount in a hotel on everyone’s behalf. It’s hard to gauge numbers at this point. But it’s looking likely to be at least twice the size of last year!
Just the post I was waiting for Sacha, this is very helpful. I’m defo going to try it. And the video is excellent… another string to your bow, well done!
Pahaha thanks Ali let me know how you find it
Great post. I use Hootsuite also. I usually forget all about scheduling tweets of my posts. What a twit! I’m pleased others tweet them for me. Scheduling tweets up to six months in advance for your own posts is a good idea. I’ll have to make an effort to do that. I seem to be the only one I don’t promote! Doh!
When I read others’ blogs I usually tweet them straight away and schedule up to three further tweets with hashtags later in the week, though that depends on the content of the post and whether the blogger has included a twitter handle in the tweet.
I listened to your video all the way through just to listen to your beautiful accent and your lovely clear instructions. Well done. 🙂
Thanks Norah – I did know you scheduled but wasn’t sure which programme you used. I am actually, about to investigate Buffer as I hear VERY good reviews and apparently it has a few more features than Hootsuite, will report back shortly! Haha, my accent! It did freak me out a little recording my voice! But it kind of puts another dimension to blogging!
I guess you think you don’t have an accent. It’s beautiful to my ears! It makes it seem like you’re just in the next room. I look forward to your review of Buffer.
Aww, well that’s a lovely thing to say Norah <3 it's almost like we met!
One day I could do with a coffee with you as you have loads of tips for blogging! I will buy the coffee whilst you talk 🙂
Hey Lucy, I would love to have a coffee with you. Why don’t you drop me an email, and we can chat about how to do that, are we connected on Facebook? I’ll give you my mob in the email.
Sachablack87 (AT) gmail (DOT) com
I will hunt you down on Facebook! Will drop you an email too 🙂
Sweet we can always do a call or something I forget where you’re from?
Wow I just posted an post I wrote on weather or not to use twitter. I asked a few questions in it more to see if someone would read and tell me about their expeirences with twitter. But, you made the use of twitter a little clearer. My only question is should a newbie to blogging like me use twitter. I am just using my blog for expressing my feelings and develop my writing skills. I have a book in rough rough draft and I am no proper writer. So, should I join twitter this early in the game. I do want followers because I love feedback and such. But I spend alot of time just on my blog will this take a bunch of time to learn? Thanks for the needed post on twitter.
YES YES YES YES. One of the key things writers need to do is create a platform. Not because it will definitely sell your books, or secure you a publisher. But it will help. It proves you have another string to your bow and you can promote yourself. It also helps you network and like you say you get immediate feedback 😀 I say do it!
Good point thank you!
Cor! Really useful video Sacha. I’m going to give this a go later. Thank you!
No probs ? I hope it does help and u see an increase in traffic ?
I use Hootsuite occasionally for scheduling tweets in the run up to book launches etc but should really use it more, one issue with Hootsuite I have found was the scheduling the instagram and sharing that way, you need to add the phone app then approve each photo message when they are due to post but for twitter and FB I recommend it
I am also loving Canva at the minute for creating graphics for blogs, FB and Tweets
Hey Paula, thanks for reading. I don’t use instagram – I should, but you know how it goes, time time time! sounds like a right bore all that approving. Glad you like Canva, I am a big fan 😀

Thanks Charles really appreciate it ?
You’re welcome. 🙂
This is awesome! I’m going to try to do this as soon as possible. Thanks!
No worries, glad u like it. <3
You now this makes me feel uterly inadequate which is quite a thing for a Monday. Great stuff, I will give it a rumble. I too am interested by Carols reference to selling books via Twitter – get her to speak at the bash?!
Yep it’s on my to do list to ask her more.
Useful stuff, I’ve dabbled with scheduling, but in a very minor way
Well then, I hope you find this useful. Let me know if you do 🙂
Geat post, Sacha. I was wondering how to do this. I’m not a great Twitter user as I get a little overwhelmed by social media. I try, but it comes down to that TIME thing! Ugh. I’m favoriting this post for when I’m full of coffee and ready to try something new. And I’m tweeting it now. 🙂
Thanks Diana, I think social media IS overwhelming. How on Earth are we meant to manage them all?! sigh. I am going to do another feature post on another website that is meant to have even more features than Hootsuite. Glad you liked it. <3
Great idea to use a video for the how-to part of the post! I use socialOomph for me scheduled tweets, but have been wondering about hootsuite for ages. Thank you 🙂
oooh, wicked thank you – I was just about to try Buffer next because I hear it has a few more features than hootsuite. But I will check that site out too.
Wicked? Sweet li’l innocent me? What gave me away?
haha, I just like that word!! :p
It *is* a rather nice one. Stealing it :b
Lol, you’re welcome to! Do you think you might make the bash this year? <3
I’d love that! No idea just yet, though 🙁
no, I imagine quite hard with a bubba, how is your baby? How is fatherhood?
Busy 😀
I work from home, which is great, as I get to spend all my time with the wee one. The minus is that I ended up working until 1 am last night to catch up with everything, got to sleep at 3 and got up again at 8. All worth it, though 🙂
Aargh! How old is your baby now? What did you have? I missed all the excitement but knew you had one. Mines 2 now, so I sympathise with the lack of sleep! In fact what is sleep?!
Please don’t say that. Mine is an adorable baby girl, 40 days old (see http://nicholasrossis.me/2016/01/12/mister-phlegmatic-meets-the-baby/ and http://nicholasrossis.me/2016/01/16/mary-natalie-photos/ ). I was hoping that I’d rediscover sleep long before she turned 2!
Don’t worry girls sleep earlier than boys anyway! You’ll be fine, I’ll have a look at your post. ??
Phew, thanks *wipes sweat from brow*
6 months? :O I’m in awe. Seriously.
Lol thanks! Xx
PS: check your featured photo… you’ve missed out the first “i” in efficient. 😉 xx
FUCCCCCCCCCCCCK. how did that happen???? GUTTED. So gutted must change it IMMEDIATELY! I’m furious with myself as this is now 6 months worth of tweets I have to change! FML! Thanks for pointing it out ?
Oh no 🙁 I’m sorry! being so organised is costing you now but typos happen. Don’t beat yourself up like that!!
Haha I know right – u think your being organised and then you shot yourself in the foot! Still, at least it’s only a 5 min job to correct it!
I started scheduling a few weeks ago, but not as far ahead as you do. 6 months wow!
How many tweets do you recommend to schedule per day. Thanks, Solveig
haha, well I figure it saves me a job, but hey, when the six months are up, Im buggered! its going to be a long old night rescheduling everything!
In number six, I mention the rough times of day I post – this is primarily on Monday’s because of the success of the Monday blogs hashtag. But I do:
8-10:30am – cause people sit down at work and check twitter before getting on with the day job.
11:45 – 13:30 lunchtimes (people on breaks at work)
16:45- 18:00 Post work – checks on route to the car, train/bus home
19:30 onwards – this is when most people look at blogs and social media – evening times.
Hope this helps.
This is brilliant. I don’t schedule anything. Every last tweet and post is all me. I don’t fully trust technology but…time! ? I’m bookmarking this. Tons of other interesting info regarding Twitter here. Thanks.
Tut. :p well I hope this gives you the confidence to start scheduling <3

No probs Janice, glad you liked it. 😀 <3
These are good suggestions, some of them I’ve learned the hard way. Wish I had the eyesight to spend hours on social media liking new people and reading 100 follows, but it’s not going to happen. A friend saved my sanity by suggesting Buffer and walking me through it.
In essence, I don’t know what I’m doing, I just do what I can. 🙂
Yeah, unfortunately, I learnt the hard way too. I have actually heard REALLY positive reviews about Buffer. Thats my next task as I hear it has a few more features than hoot suite. Thank you for reading
Awesome post, Sasha, super useful tips!
Thank you Gulara, glad you found it helpful <3
Thanks for this, Sacha. I have used Hootesuite but am very much a newbie.
Well I hope it helps – my next mission is to understand Buffer, as I have seen even more positive reviews of that site, will report back shortly!!
I use hootsuite as well and normally schedule about a month in advance. I both schedule my tweets (meaning tweets from my content) and RT of great posts I find online. I also tweet lots of pics
I’m not sure how much this is working for me, but at the moment I’m trying to implement on this scheme 🙂
CoSchedule is another tool I’m very interested in. I haven’t tried it yet because you have to pay to use it 🙁
How do you go about scheduling your tweets?
Thats fab, I am about to check out Buffer as I also hear amazing things about that programme too. Do you have a look at your stats on wordpress? It has a section that tells you who your referrers are – so it should tell you how many refers you have had from twitter.
Currently I use Hootsuite, and do everything I said in the post – mondays are my heaviest schedule day as its the most successful hashtag – I always use photos too, and schedule each post for the following 6 months or so. Then start all over again! I get a fair amount of traffic from twitter so I think the pay off is worth it. 🙂

You’ll be fine. 🙂
I’ve heard of scheduling tweets but never tried. I might give it a go. What do you think of the auto DM responses? I hate them. Nice video too. I have to stuff like that for work all the time and I love doing it, it’s not like work really 🙂
You should, I find it so useful and it does drive traffic too. I hate the auto DMs. Its why now, instead of thanking every RT, I only thank those that tweet direct from the post. I don’t have enough time to thank 500 people every monday for their generous RTs, so I would rather thank the few that read the post and share it. I think its more genuine than a DM. Haha, it was fun to film it. Never done anything like that before. What’s your day job?
I’m an IT trainer
If you want to see how not to do IT training I did a bloopers reel on my About page if you get time to check it
lol, I watched it – I also watched your everybody dance now video which made me lol even harder!!
Haha thanks for watching. I do do serious stuff too lol
Meh – I like the fun! :p
Great article, Sacha! I create processes to manage my time. Even the flash fiction is a process that frames my week. I need such continuity. I don’t schedule tweets (yet) and I actually have a different program. But I like accessing the twitter community every Monday and when I can on Fridays. I visit blogs I follow and do as much sharing as I can, pin my most important tweet (usually the challenge). It doesn’t take much time, but it requires my availability on Mondays and Fridays which can be hard days to follow thru (thus, scheduling would solve that issue). Thanks!
Hi Charli,
Glad I’m not the only one constantly seeking new ways to manage my time. Well I hope you find it useful, at least it means you aren’t stuck rigidly to Mondays and Thursdays anymore. Still can’t believe your internet guys said they can’t fix it – what does that even mean? You won’t have any more internet at all?????? :O I couldn’t cope!
A great article, Sacha, and judging from the comment string, it answers a need!
I’m a big believer in scheduling posts. I have to, I don’t yet write for a living and scheduling allows me to hit the peak times of the day when my followers are most likely to see my tweets (Hi mom!).
I use Buffer. I like that it does one thing and does it well — schedule tweets (well, and other social media posts too). I really like the ability to add videos and images directly to the tweet. The only drawback is the free version only allows you to schedule ten tweets at a time.
I find two other tools quite helpful: Tweriod, which helps you figure out the best times to tweet based on your followers, and ManageFlitter to help you prune accounts you don’t want to follow.
Heh, DMs — don’t like them, but I have received some unintentionally hilarious ones. Might be worthy of a blog post … if only I had the time. 🙂
Hey Brant, thanks so much for the lovely comment. Glad you schedule too. I couldn’t live without scheduling. I have heard a LOT of good things about Buffer. In fact thats my next programme to review, I hear its better than Hootsuite. I haven’t heard of Tweriod, so thanks for that I will have to check it out and although I had heard of unfollowers I haven’t heard of ManageFlitter. I have lots to swot up on. Thanks again Brant. P.s. I agree on DMs – annoying and puts me off.
Great information, Sacha. Your directions are so easy to follow.
Thanks Michelle 🙂 Glad you found it useful
This is such a neat, useful post, dear Sacha…
I schedule my tweets each night, using unfollowers.com… But you can’t schedule too much in advance, but probably just for the two following days… Furthermore, You are not given the option to attach images… I will definitely check out the tutorial in depth… I am looking forward to doing so… Thank you, gal ?
Sending love and best wishes. Aquileana ⭐️?
Aloha Aqujleana, thank you for saying such lovely things. Ah yes, I have seen / heard of unfollowers but i didn’t know it had a function to schedule tweets. The other system thats good is Buffer – I have that one down to review next.
Hi Sach. Awesome post and video. It seems pre-setting tweets is my nemesis in the social media world. I have a hootsuite and buffer account, and use none of them. At first I didn’t get the hang of it, and then I found it time consuming to set up tweets when it was just as easy to tweet. I know many use it, but I tweet a lot randomly, and I like the variety I tweet. I also know there are better and best times of days to tweet but one can only do so much. I tweet in mornings when I’m doing mail checks and 10 mins on Twitter. I come across interesting articles throughout each day and night that I tweet, and I read and tweet blogs at night, so I feel I’m doing my share of tweeting. I’m quite happy with the rate my followers are growing there so I’m not to worried. Is this a bad thing? 🙂
No of course not. We all have our likes and dislikes. You, for example, are SO much better on Google+ than me, and that really helps your SEO ratings and presence on google searches. We all only have time for what we have time for, and if we all did the same thing it would be boring. I just happen to like twitter, so thought I’d share the twitter love/knowledge 🙂
I’m glad you did. I haven’t used my hootsuite in almost 2 years, lol. Some things just come a little more naturally to others. As always great info. Maybe I’m just a dinosaur, doing things the old fashioned way, lol. 🙂
You are not even close to being a dinosaur! <3
Thanks for the vote of confidence! <3
I have HootSuite but obviously don’t use it properly 😀 Also, I’ve resisted scheduling tweets simply because I’ve muted a lot of people who just spam constantly and I don’t want to be like that. However, the way you do things sounds very reasonable and so perhaps I should give it a try – I also like to do spontaneous tweets too whenever I feel like it (though apparently Twitter was down for four hours the other day and I didn’t even notice – that should give you an idea of how often I spontaneously tweet). At the moment I have a love/hate relationship with Twitter and one of my goals this year is to get my head around it a bit more. So thanks for yet another informative post – don’t know how you do it!
Yeah thats true – I hate people that spam. I do tweet a LOT on some days, but I tend to schedule at least one tweet for everyone I follow, or most people anyway on the same day. So I feel like its roughly one of mine for one of someone elses which kind of negates the spam. But maybe you’re right maybe I should tweet less. I had no idea twitter was down either :S If you get your head round it let me know!! Im still trying!
Oh, I don’t think you tweet too much! And your tweets seem very well ordered and thought out as well. It’s more when something happens, like Bowies passing, and I go on Twitter and all I see are tweets about my book my book my book, those are the people you know are just spamming tweets out there, they’re not present, if you know what I mean. Does that sound a bit loopy? Maybe I’m not getting what Twitter is for 😀
No I 100% agree. One of my bug bears is DMs – can’t stand it. they are all BUY MY BOOK F oofffffff. I’ll buy it if i want to. you know? They drive me insane. I’ll never do that.
F offffff indeed! I know, I just groan when I follow someone and get a DM straight away. Does it even sell books anymore? Surely we’re all immune to it by now. Like you say, if I want your book, I’ll go out and get it.
1000000000% agree. It’s so over! One of those stupid fads people did but it’s last year and still they cling on!!

but of course, its an honour to be reblogged <3
I love Twitter, but I’ve never used Hootsuite. In their free version how many tweets a month are you allowed to schedule for free? I use Tweet Jukebox and they now only allow five free scheduled tweets a month unless you pay for more. I don’t want to have to pay to schedule my tweets so I am looking elsewhere.
As many as you want so I can see – but it’s not like jukebox in that it repeats every few hours. U have to schedule each one – but u can make a template so that it’s just clicking the time and date rather than writing it from scratch each time
Ah, Okay, so you keep having to go into it to reschedule the tweets?
Yes it’s not as bad as it sounds though. I believe buffer can do multiple schedules but that’s my next programme to review
It’s just the time factor, isn’t it? I remember when I was introduced to Jukebox and how once I’d scheduled the tweets, that was it until I wanted to add new ones or remove some. It’s such a shame they started charging, but I suppose the owners saw a market and are now making money out of it. I’ve not heard of Buffer.
BTW – Great video. I’ve made one for a post I am publishing tomorrow. Have you added your video to YouTube?
Yep I added it to YouTube as it was the easiest thing to do to get it on the blog. I’ll check yours out then.
I hear buffer has more functionality than hootsuite at the minute I haven’t figured it out tho so need to sit down and study it so I can do another video – supposedly u can schedule multiple times in buffer at once which is more than hootsuite for free anyway
