Writespiration #97 52 Weeks in 52 Words – Week 1

writespiration-2017Welcome back folks. I stopped Writespirations back in November, a few short of 100, and I knew then I couldn’t just leave it 3 short. But the break did me good, and now I am ready to rock and roll with a whole new challenge this year.

This year there will be 52 challenges over 52 weeks and your challenge is to write your story using the theme/prompt and write it in just 52 words…. EXACTLY, no more, no less.

The art of being concise is nothing if not a muscle flexing ‘write’ bicep curling device. But I wanted to add to that challenge which is why, you have to be exact too. Because there are 52 challenges over the year, THAT’s I want you to write your entries in EXACTLY 52 words.

Each week I will give you a prompt of some variety and then you submit your entries and I post them the following week with the new prompt. You’ll have until Sunday to enter each week. Continue reading

It's All In The Title – #Writespiration 86

In the TitleLast week I asked you for snippets of you, including the title of your current WIP and a little morsel from it to tease us.

This week, we’re playing another game.

In the post I’ve listed all the titles you gave me. Pick one (not your own) and write a story in less than 200 words, and tell me which title you picked.

If you want to join in, then post your story in the comments or in a post and link back here so I can find it.

Please note, I am pausing to write my novels and I read every entry which means I am a little slow at responding to comments. If your comment doesn’t appear straight away, it will, promise.

As a result of the blog pause, I am moving Writespirations to every other week, you have until Sunday 17th to get your entries in.

Writespiration #82.5 Opening and Closing Lines

Worst Open and CloseIt’s all been a bit serious lately, with heart break, discrimination and cliff edges, so this week something different.

Oh and my math might be bad, but I haven’t spontaneously jumped into decimal numbers for no reason. I’m cheating. I’d already scheduled 83 this week and changed my mind because tomorrow is my birthday and I wanted to play a fun game instead.

So what is this riotous affair I speak of? I’ve done worst opening lines, and worst closing lines before. But this time, I want both.

Your challenge is to write the WORST opening line to a story you can, and then write the WORST closing line to the same story.

The badder it is, the better, if I see even a hint of  good quality writing I’ll disqualify you faster than I can eat a family sized bar of chocolate, and don’t be fooled, that’s fast. Post both lines in the comments, or on your own blog with a ping back here so I know you’ve entered. Continue reading

I love this, this is very me. Something Sci-fi/fantasy oriented, so thought I would share.

Which twin are you? Can you change your mind? What do you do now you want to leave camp? which camp did you get sent to? What does it look like? who else is there? where is your family? What does being evil, or good mean/look like? whats your next step? why does the government make these decisions?

As ever if this inspired you let me know

Who did they murder? Was the murderer male or female or something else? Was it justified? Was it evil and cruel? how did they commit murder? Why did they do it? Were they forced or was it free will? why do they need a friend? Are they in prison? are they going to prison? Are they being put to death?

As ever let me know if this inspired you.

muse

I have posted this picture once before. It’s a photo that when I found it, changed my life. I’m not sure how to explain it. But, everyone has an inner image. A perfect self so to speak. An image of how you see yourself, or what you strive for. This is mine. This is how I would look if I could. I can’t because I cut all my hair off and don’t have the patience to grow it back, let alone have dreadlocks. But still. It’s more than that. This image – the whole image – represents me, on so many levels and in so many ways, I won’t bore you with. I could spend hours looking at this photo and I don’t really know why. It speaks to me, I need it. It’s also partly responsible for inspiring major aspects of my novel. It’s kind of a muse for me this picture. So I thought I would share it.

Do you have any particular muses? What are they? Pictures? People? Music? I would be interested to know what gives you inspiration.

Down to business –

Who is the girl in the photo? Where is she going? Where has the train come from? What is it carrying? Why is it carrying that contents? Why are there so many containers? Is the photo on Earth, or another planet? Why is she alone? What is she feeling? What is she doing? What secrets do the forests hold? Does the river the train is crossing hold any significance?

As ever, if this inspired you let me know, and don’t forget to tell me about your Muses.

I just love this. I saw it and couldn’t resist posting it. This is definitely one of those inspirational images that makes me want to write all kinds of crazy stories!

Why were you meant to die yesterday? How did you survive? Why did you survive? Are you being hunted? Is everyone in society euthanised? What’s the tattoo like? Where on your arm is it? What happens next? What’s your goal – Stay alive? Or take society down? Do you know what your going to die of too? The options with this one, are endless as ever! Let me know if this inspired you and if you wrote anything cause of it.

It reminds me slightly of Justin Timerblakes film ‘In Time’

Happy Writing

I love these little posts, mostly because they inspire me too. Sometimes they give me ideas for characters or flash fiction or plot twists, other times not so much, but I at least hope they are helping someone out there in the bloggishpere!

So to the picture…

where did you leave? was it home? work? or a fantasy place? was it somewhere you were meant to be? or were you doing something naughty, illegal or evil?

who did you see? an ex, an old tutor, an alien, a long lost lover, the one who got away, someone who hurt you, physically hurt you or someone you care about… the options are endless.

As always, let me know if this inspired you

kids gun

I simply love this, so emotive, and instantly conjures loads of images. I posted this in my writing group, and we had a couple of really good responses.

What happens next? Why did the kid have the gun? What did they do? Did they shoot? Or was it just a threat? What led to this situation?

Let me know if this inspired you.

Writing Tips #3 The Evil INTJ – The Supervillain

hans21

Ok, so I promise that I won’t constantly talk about Myers Briggs, it is only because I wrote that first post, and then found this blog by Mandy Wallace, about traditional ‘evil’ characters and that they are often INTJ’s, but that writers often mistake what an INTJ is really like. I strongly advise you go read the whole blog – it is fascinating.

The blogger names a lot of typical evil INTJ characters such as: Professor Moriarty, Lex Luther, Emperor Palpatine and Khan, INTJs are the personality type that people love to hate. Which concerns me greatly, because as an ENTJ, I share a lot of similar characteristics! *worried*

The blog also goes into detail about why they are perfect as villains, from their arrogance, to their social awkwardness, and subsequent withdrawal. However, the blogger also notes the following points which are very poignant for any writer of villains:

  • “INTJs are extremely unconventional by most other type’s standards.
  • The INTJ doesn’t care about social rules or the standard way of doing things. He cares only if something works.
  • INTJs abhor going along with inefficient or ineffective tasks just because they’ve always been done that way. And the social conventions that keep the outdated in place have zero effect on the INTJ.
  • The INTJ will work tirelessly to change flawed methods, moving quickly and without “permission.”
  • Since INTJs aren’t always great at explaining their methods, nor do they understand that other people can’t see the patterns and problems that seem obvious to them, their actions can sometimes appear unpredictable and lacking good cause to outsiders.

Finally, I think the paragraphs that really sums up why INTJs are perfect super villains is:

“All of this analysis, coupled with an inability to explain these processes to others, plus their ultimate need to create systems that work means that the INTJ takes confident action while ignoring complainers, naysayers, and doubters. So what you have is a man who knows what he is doing and doesn’t care what other people think about it. “Smart” doesn’t really explain the INTJ’s thinking, though. Because they don’t just memorize data. They break it down to its principles to understand how it all works together and what it implies about every other fact. This makes them incredibly insightful by other people’s standards. Objectively, INTJs have the highest collective IQ of any other type.

This magic elixir: perceived arrogance + perceived lack of emotion + perceived unpredictability + intelligence = prime fictional villain. “
