Writespiration #93 Underwater Ballroom

BallroomI get inspiration from all over the place, I actively seek it out on a daily basis. Basically I’m a sniffer dog only my crack cocaine happen to be quirky ideas. Although I’m hard at work editing Keepers, I can’t help but ferret away at other projects. Currently I’m searching for location inspiration for a different book series.

I found something awesome recently in an article on the Atlas Obscurer, and I just had to share it. They found a ballroom built under a lake. You can check out the article here. The ballroom happens to actually be a smoking room, but they called it a ballroom, and that was enough to send my mind reeling. What if it really were a ballroom? The glass roof, now covered in algae would have allowed dancers to view the creatures in the lake while they danced. I almost have to squeeze my temples to prevent all the ideas falling out. I love this.

Your challenge this week is to set a piece of flash fiction under water. Write a story in less than 200 words. Paste in the comments or use a pingback and submit before 7th August.

As always, I am slow to respond to entries because I read and moderate everyone, you may find a delay before your story appears and before I comment. Continue reading

Write for 120 seconds

A little while ago I set a writespiration challenge to write for 60 seconds, using the word silence as your inspiration. It was so successful I thought I would re run it. Like last time don’t look at the word till you’re ready to write.

Write till the time is up and share wherever it took you in the comments. Ready? Continue reading

Nurture Yourself in the Pursuit of Perfection #1000speak

Nurture Yourself in The Pursuit of Perfection #1000speak

There used to be a time when I would accept nothing less than perfection. I still fight the frustration when I’m not completely perfect.

I’ve come to believe perfectionism it’s a disease. An infection that slowly eats away at your skin until it buries itself into your bone and spreads to every corner of your body like an angry cancer. The growing niggle questioning whether perfectionism is something to be strived for, or maybe, abhorred has become a raging monster, and now, a blog post… Continue reading

I am going to look at creating different series for this year so that these posts are themed and have some consistency, but whilst I do that, I shall continue on with the writespiration photo posts.

muse

I have posted this picture once before. It’s a photo that when I found it, changed my life. I’m not sure how to explain it. But, everyone has an inner image. A perfect self so to speak. An image of how you see yourself, or what you strive for. This is mine. This is how I would look if I could. I can’t because I cut all my hair off and don’t have the patience to grow it back, let alone have dreadlocks. But still. It’s more than that. This image – the whole image – represents me, on so many levels and in so many ways, I won’t bore you with. I could spend hours looking at this photo and I don’t really know why. It speaks to me, I need it. It’s also partly responsible for inspiring major aspects of my novel. It’s kind of a muse for me this picture. So I thought I would share it.

Do you have any particular muses? What are they? Pictures? People? Music? I would be interested to know what gives you inspiration.

Down to business –

Who is the girl in the photo? Where is she going? Where has the train come from? What is it carrying? Why is it carrying that contents? Why are there so many containers? Is the photo on Earth, or another planet? Why is she alone? What is she feeling? What is she doing? What secrets do the forests hold? Does the river the train is crossing hold any significance?

As ever, if this inspired you let me know, and don’t forget to tell me about your Muses.

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner… Or NaNo?!

Hate to gloat… Actually, no, no I don’t. At least not in this instance… because…. drumroll please…..

It’s official, November 26th took me to a staggering 50,070 words… I celebrated and then promptly wept into my repetitively strained fingertips at the realisation I still had another 30-40K to go dawned on me. Did I mention the need for several redrafts?

KILL ME NOW.

I am also at the point where I can’t decide whether to add in a twist, which would fundamentally change an aspect of the book.

hmmmm.

Anyway, good luck to all those still NaNo-ing. As Dory would say “Just keep swimming, Just keep swimming”

Here’s another little image to unblock that writers block.

What is it you have to say? was it an affair? is the world going to end? do you know a secret? are you the secret? did you do something wrong? or good? who are you telling? brother? sister? mum? government? friend? enemy? colleague? why are you telling them now? what is it about this point in time thats made you tell them?

If this helped unblock your writers block or inspired you to write something let me know 🙂

I love these little posts, mostly because they inspire me too. Sometimes they give me ideas for characters or flash fiction or plot twists, other times not so much, but I at least hope they are helping someone out there in the bloggishpere!

So to the picture…

where did you leave? was it home? work? or a fantasy place? was it somewhere you were meant to be? or were you doing something naughty, illegal or evil?

who did you see? an ex, an old tutor, an alien, a long lost lover, the one who got away, someone who hurt you, physically hurt you or someone you care about… the options are endless.

As always, let me know if this inspired you
